I Have A 68 F100 With A Saginaw Manual Steering BoX. I Can Buy A 71 With A Saginaw P/s Box AnD Goodies. MY 68 Has Three On The Tree And The 71 Is Auto. Can A Easy Swap Be Made???
Thank You All For Welcoming Me.
Thesprocket26, Now I Have Read About Conversions From A Bendix Manual Box To A Saginaw P/s System And The Headache Of Swapping Colmuns, With An Auto. (i Would Like To Stay With The 3 Speed Because It Would Be Rare)
I Just Don't No If My 3 0n The Tree Colmun Is Short Enough.
I've read somewhere on here that you can take the shaft out of your column and put the shorter shaft from the ps column in. I have never done this myself. You could also get a 3spd floor shifter, and use the other column. I got my setup out of a 73 ford pickup that was an auto. Mine is a 4speed and everything just bolted right on. You can find the floor shifter on ebay, or I have one that is brand new in the box. I sure that if you try to use your column shaft with the pwr, it won't work. Measure the length of the shafts, maybe youll get lucky.
Good luck
I took the non- P/S shaft out of my '70 and shortened it, and had a welding shop weld it together (I don't trust myself to weld something that important!)
The shaft out of the donor/power steering column will work. Be careful if you are pulling an original steering wheel off of the old shaft, mine cracked when I did it.
Ok Fellas, This Is What I Am Hearing... Use A Donor Shaft From An Automatic P/s Colmun, keep The Shifting Shaft(inner Parts In The Three On The Tree)intact(being Careful Not To Crack The Wheels, When Removing)
And Reasemble... Is This Right, Almost Ready
Thanks In Advance Max68
Your coulumn outer might be too long even if you swap the inner shaft. I have a pic in my gallery with the long shaft I cut and welded. It has to be pretty close to the firewall to work with a saginaw box. You might get lucky with shortening your current 3-on-the-tree column.
