Bought a 2003 F-250 Super Duty FX4 (6.0 diesel) several months ago and have started to notice some engine surging or cycling at constant speeds. This happens with and without the cruise control on. MPH and RPM do not fluctuate. In addition, when the truck is stopped and still in gear the engine seems to get very quiet--in other words it loses the normal diesel "clack". There is a little hesitation during acceleration from a dead stop but once the "normal" sound comes back it runs fine except for the cycling. I'm new to the diesel world so any information would be appreciated. Just got back from a trip and averaged 18 mpg. I love the truck!!
I had the same problem with my 2005. I took it to the dealer and it took quite a while to locate the problem, it showed no codes when they first hooked it up. Turned out to be the actuator on the variable geomerty turbocharger had a little stitching going on. They also replaced something on the EGR system but the tech seemed to think the actuator was the main problem. It did finally produce a code when they hooked up to the computer and took it out on the road.
My tach would stitch under hard acceleration 50-75 rpm but with cruise on the engine would only change pitch.
The problem that I experienced was not "normal" in any way. The Ford Tech was in agreement on that. The EGR should constantly get updated from the engine management computer as to its correct position, however this will not cause the surging that I described. The Tech replaced a sensor that had some control over the EGR system thinking it would resolve the problem. This was before it produced an error code. When they finally were able to produce an error code it lead the tech to the VGT actuator. All this happened pre and post hurricane Rita over the course of three weeks, so my memory is a bit vague. Had bigger problems on my mind at the time. However the surging was not "normal".
The truck operated as it should in every other way: power, fuel mileage, rolling down the road at idle hour after hour as 3 million of my closest friends and I left the coast.
