Need Help Identifying this Rear End

As the thread title suggests, I need some assistance identifying this rear end. It came with a parts truck that I bought from FTE's very own "bobbytnm". Unfortunately, Bobby had know idea what it came fram and stated it was attached to the frame when he bought the truck.

Here is what I do know:

- 4 lugs
- 10 bolt rear cover
- Flanged pinion
- It looks very similar to the 5 lug rear end in my 96 Explorer
- Tag with the following series of #'s on it
201A
S2L73A888F22

Here are a couple of pictures. Any help would be appreciated.

Only thing that I can think that had 4-lugs and was rear wheel drive is a Fox Body Mustang. Maybe someone with more knowledge will know for sure.

Edit: If it is a Mustang rear and you choose to use it, here is a handy article on how to convert it to 5-lug. http://www.stangnet.com/tech/lug.html It's in the middle of the page.

Its an 8.8 out of mustang double check wms should be 59 inches or so. Someone has take off the lower control arm mounts and welded on spring perches. The bushings on top were for the upper control arms. it has 2.73 gears and a trak loc rearend. The ranger/aerostar axles can be swapped in for 5 lugs.

Any idea as to what year Mustang??

I don't really need it but I have a 97 Ranger and a 96 Explorer in the fleet and I thought about hanging on to it for parts. Best way I know of to ensure that the existing rear ends in those vehicles never break. I'll bet the farm that if I get rid of this, one or both of my other vehicles will have a rear end failure within 30 days. Ever the optimist I am.

Is the trac-loc the limited slip??

Also, did you pull the gear ratio and trac loc info out of the numbers? How were you able to determine this?

Thanks,

Carl

I found this from a Mustang forum after Gary posted. The date code on yours is different, but I bet it would be from a 1988 built on Feb. 22, if the info is correct from what I found.
201A = Axle model code
2SL73 = Gear ratio & differential type (2.73:1 w/ Traction-Lok)
A = unknown
88 = Ring gear diameter (8.8")
7B08 = Date code (February 8, 1987/97)
I would think the internals would swap to your Ranger and Explorer, but I'm not positive. If you have room, you maight as well hang on to it.

Rob and Gary,

Thanks a bunch for the information. I guess I will hang onto it for now. If someone needs it, let me know. I'm only hanging onto it in case one of my other breaks. If you know someone who is dead in the water becasue they need one of these, I'd be happy to let go of it.

Do either of you guys kno anything about the reliability of the traction-loc? Is it a limited slip? Does it have a decent reputation? Unfortunately, there is a big gap in my knowledge of Ford drivelines starting about 1980 and running through the early 90's. I really appreicate you guys helping me with this.

Carl

traction-loc is used in explorers,mustangs, etc. its like posi only when you turn one wheel will move slower unlike posi where both move at the same speed causing wear on the inner turnning tire. i.e. turnning right the left tire will spin slower than the right creating less wear on the left tire

I think trak loks are great easy and cheap to rebuild and wear well. Great for a street vehicle.

No problem Carl. I don't know anything about the trac-loc. You could do a search on a Mustang site and probably come up with some good answers though.

Track-loc has been used for a long time in the 7.5 (ranger, mustang, aerostar, etc.), and is in the 8.8s now. I have one in my 01 explorer. They are rebuildable and seem to be pretty reliable (from what I have heard of older ones). Very streetable. They do fair off road, but are not that close to a locker. Its a trade off...one or the other(IMHO).

Thanks for all of the replies folks. Sure seems like an awful lot of rear end for a car with 4-lug wheels. Oh well. At least I know what I have now. Also, it measures approx. 59.5" from hub flange to hub flange.

Well...some of them had 5.0s (not H.O.) and some had the turbos in them.Those are both more than the little 2.9, 3.0, 4.0 ranger ever though of. No clue why they had 4 lugs other than cost maybe.

Oh I agree, there were plenty of Mustangs with engines that would certainly warrant this rear end. I'm just curious why there was a 4lug version of it. If the wheels only required a 4-lug wheel, I would think they could have used a much lighter rear end. I guess I will keep my eye out for a set of 5-lug axles. Any idea which ones fit or are they all roughly the same width?

No I don't know what swaps around. I will link you to a couple of mustang and a t-bird/cougar site though. The information is probably in them.

I am learning everything I can about the engines for a future swap.

All Mustangs up to (I think) '95 used 4-lugs, much to the chagrin of my son who wants some modern 17" replacement rims for his '93 GT... They are plenty strong.

Here I am am about 2 miles from Bobby, thinking of getting a 3.50 rear end, and I take it you guys drove several hundred miles to swap parts? I wish I'd known about this... I gotta pay more attention!
