I bought a 2002 Mountaineer (4L 5spd auto AWD) last year and was surprised to learn that it did not have a transmission dipstick. Some research indicated that Ford believes the trans is good for 150 K miles if left sealed. I intend to go ahead and flush mine with the new Mercon V fluid as soon as I can find the time. I don't see any problem with the level, however, as it has to be filled through a plug just like a manual transmission, and should be filled to the level of the fill hole.
I have been off this site for a year or so, as I have retired and moved from Texas, back to my Florida home area. I am busy building my "final" earthbound home, (with my own hands) but hope to finish it soon and be more active here.
