I am in the market for a 2002 X limited 4x4 diesel w/80,000 and was wondering what the most reasonable price I should pay for a nice clean truck. I found one that is pretty nice for around $28k. any advice would be appreciated.

JDH, I bought my 2004 Excursion as well as a 1995 Bronco off of Ebay. Even if you don't buy from Ebay, I think they are a good source for determining value.
You'll see a range of prices. Average them all out, and then take about $2000 off the trade-in/wholesale values. That's probably going to be pretty close to what the dealer has into it.
Gives you a starting point, anyway. In my opinion, $28,000 is about $5000 too high.
Sounds high to me too-just picked up my '00 Limited, 4x4 diesel X with a few more miles than you are looking at, but only paid 15k, and the thing is cherry...
way to high! i have seen 2002-2003 7.3 deisel 4x4 limited's with under 100,000 miles for $18-$24 all around my area. also look at autotrader.com where i found my first one

This thing is super nice and I really like the quad seating but I do agree its about $5k to high. thanks for all your opinions.
No wonder it is “Houston automotive group”. Just do a little HW and you will find this is one stealership that has taken resale value to new heights! I have been looking into their inventory for some time now and man they are just over priced. Not sure who would buy truck from them.
i bought my 01 limited 4x4 v10 3.73 lsd 5 tv's 65000 for $15200. and it is mint. never even had a trailer on it. around here(philadelphia PA) the diesels, same truck, different engine,go for about $19000.

JDH70518 I just bought an 01' Limited Powerstroke, 4x4 for 26K. Only had 32k on the motor and the leather in all except the drivers seats looked like no one has ever even sat there. The thing is pretty as can be from top to bottom. I passed on a identical X as far as apperance goes. It was a 2002 with 100k on the motor,4x4 psd all the goods, it sold for $25,500. I decided to go for the low milage on the 01 because the price was close. I also passed on a 00' limited 4x4 psd that had 65k on the motor. Wasnt quite as nice as the other 2 but it was advertised for $21K. Got him down to 19K on the phone. When I went to look at it found no oil on the dip stick. So I passed. It sold for 20K. I live about 50 miles south of washington DC so things tend to creep up in price around here. Im sure someone is going to rip me for paying 26k for the one I got, but I dont mind paying the extra money for the piece of mind I got out of a cheery limited X w/ only 32k miles on it. Hope that helped.

The NADA loan value is about $ 23k, which is what a banker is willing to loan on that truck, and this takes into account cases where the buyer may default and the truck would be auctioned. Hence, I never pay more than loan value, since that is what the truck is deemed worth by the money folks. I just bought an 02 v-10 X for 16,400, but I was lucky to be at the dealer on 12/31 about 2 hours after the prev owner had traded it in, and they were glad to be able to turn it so quickly.
Go to any bank and ask for the loan person. They all have an NADA little orange book. Usually, they have last months copies which they will give you for free if you smile and are a customer of their bank. One that is a month old is practically current, I just knock off $ 150 - 200 for every month it is in arrears. Loan value is the only way to go, otherwise you are throwing money away IMO.
