The hubs on my 84 F150 4x4, keep slinging grease out. I think the O ring is bad. Anyone know what size those are supposed to be, and where to get them? I asked at my local advance one day, and they told me I had to get a hub rebuilt kit.
There's a grease seal behind the inner bearing that's probably shot. Any auto parts store not run by complete idiots should be able to get you the seal. It's a very common and cheap part - maybe $4.
Hmmm. interesting. Sounds like this could be my culprit. Granted it's been a couple of years since I had tore my hubs apart, but I only remember the O-ring that is on the chrome lock - unlock selector. Then the hub junk, the the lock nuts, then a seal.. That's it. Because I always replaced that seal that was on the back side. Guess I need to see if I can locate a breakdown diagram.
From outboard to inboard with manual hubs, you have:
- Chrome cap with **** for locking/unlocking hubs. Comes off with six hex head screws.
- Snap ring around the end of the axle shaft, and ring that sits just inside the hub body. This is what keeps the hub in place.
- the hub itself
- outer lock nut
- retaining ring
- inner lock nut
- outer bearing
- inner bearing
- grease seal
The rotor of course comes off when you take the inner locknut off. The outer bearing falls out, and the inner bearing is held in by the seal.
Ok, i believe my problem the O-ring on the chrome cap is bad, since I loose grease out the front, and not the back. Just want to bump this thread in case anyone knows where to get the O-rings, or the correct size.
If its the Dana 44 frontend. Part numbers for the Outer O ring seal on the cap is PN# 1A050 and Larger O ring, under the manual lock is PN# 1A030. I dont have the sizes of them.I also have the 85-86 PN# using the auto locking hub. PN# 1K106 Hope this helps.
