I have a 79 f-250 2wd truck and there is a squeeling sound coming from one of the front breaks when driving. But when you apply the breaks it stops. Is there something that I can do about this. The breaks are fairly new.
I think you read my question wrong, they dont squeel when you apply them, it squeels when you drive all the time! drives me nuts! . There must be something that rubs that make that sound, sometime's I apply the breaks just to make it stop.
The break pads rotors and drums are all new.
Thanks
Joe
Did you or your mechanic use the anti squeal goop? I think it's silicone, you put it on the back of the pads to dampen vibaration.

Mine did the exact same thing with new rotors as well, and I too would tap the brakes to make them stop squeling. I replaced the semi mettalic pads with organic ones and it went away. If I were to take a guess as to why the squeek it would be the age of my calipers and them MABEY not retracting enough, keeping the pads in contact with the rotor ever so slightly. With the organics no metal in the pads so no squeek.
Fordblue,
Your using semi-metallic brake pads. They are too hard and they squeal/squeak/chirp/etc. There is the possibility that the wear indicators are bent and touching the rotor prematurely and that can drive you crazy. Organic pads are softer and much quieter, of course they don't last. When you check your pads, glue them down to the caliper piston. Get carried away with this gobblity goop that they put on'em. If you live up north you'll have to place the blue gue on the back of the brake pad and cook'em in the oven to get it to harden. It seems a little extreme but I've had customers that wouldn't settle for less.

I think the anti squeal stuff works mostly when the shoes are chattering. Also I have seen the warning tang on some shoes misadjusted out of the box. And then some pads are just hard as heck.
