I have been averaging about 13 MPG driving my 65 to and from work The trip is about 10 miles city and 7 miles freeway. Considering the best this 352 used to do was 9 I have been a bit excited.
Well this morning I made a trip of 191 miles and filled it up upon my return with 10.65 gallons of gas. That equates to 17.9 MPG. I held a steady 65 the entire trip. I think I have hit my limits as far as gas mileage goes.
I think you must have finally driven the truck like you own it I found that at a steady (reasonable) speed any vehicle gets rather good mpg...I cant wait to see how the 352 does with all the added jewelry on the grapevine, 5FWY north ...kills even newer turds these days.
I'm running a Holley carb that I jetted down to 64's I changed the rear gears to 3.00 and at 65 she is running about 2500 rpm's. I also installed the dura spark ignition, headers and 3" single exhaust. I think the new tires also had a bit to do with it. I have read that cheap tires will cost you MPG's so I upgraded to Michelins.
I think Redman may also be right about driving it like you own it. I tend to get a bit lead footed in town when some kid thinks his rice burner will take me off the line. She sure shows them.
You have me beat I got 13.9 on a leg of a recent trip. I should have run it slower, but out on a 70 mph hiway, I couldn't resist, and was running a lot of 78-80 mph.
I bet mine would drop conciderly if I was running her up above 70. That would put my RPM's back up around 2800 and that is were she seems to get thursty.
I may have to install A/C and take her to Montana or something to see what happens on a real long run.
JD, I know I should have run it about 60, but I get such a testostorone rush driving my FE powered truck, after driving my Taurus truck most of the time, I had to let it gittiupango.
I know the feeling, my daily driver is a GMC Sonoma with a 2.2 4 banger. It has taken a while to work the testostorone out of my system to get to the point I could drive it almost 200 miles without putting my foot in it.
I don't expect to get that kind of mileage all the time, I know my own foot and it is tempting to here the old FE roar.
You know to that we only brag about our best mileage not our worst. The tank before that was about 11.5 mpg so I had to make up for it I gues.
