Purchased VR3 system from Kragen Auto Parts. Want to hook up to 2003 F150 SuperCrew but not sure how. Said to connect red power wire to ACC power terminal in fuse box (does that mean back side of fuse block) no place in front. Also said to locate vehicle back-up light circuit and splice in Blue DC12+V wire. Would like to have it on toggle switch instead of Reverse. Would it be easier to hook up everything to wires at tow plug? Hope this isn't too dumb to be asking.
No such thing as a dumb question. If you don't know then you won't learn without asking. When they say ACC power terminal, they mean a switched power source. In other words, something that has power only when the vehicle is running or the key is in the RUN position. Under the dash is not the only place. There is also a fuse block under the hood that may have an open spot. But double check your fuse block under the dash again. There is usually about 2 open spots for both switched and constant power. As for the backup light wire, that is to activate the camera. You can put it on a toggle switch. Just put it on a switched power source as well. Otherwise, you may wind up turning on the camera and forget to turn it off after you have parked and walked away.
Thanks so much...you got me on the right track and I think I can handle it now. No more smashed up license plate or dents in tailgate hooking up to boat trailer alone.
Called VR3 (Virtual Reality Video Labs, Eatontown, New Jersey). Comes with color monitor; license plate camera; and all hardware and cables. Bought it here in San Diego at Kregen Auto Parts for $145.00. J.C.Whitney has system for over $400. I like this one just fine (so far...not hooked up yet). I wanted it for hooking up to trailer and now my wife wants one on her PTCruiser to help in parking. Hope this helps.
I have been using the two dowels with magnetic base's, but it still takes a couple tries to get it right and I have a small dent in tailgate to prove it isn't foolproof. Can't wait to sit in cab and see everything back there without turning my head around or waiting for the crunch..ouch!
Nice! I assume the monitor has some kind of bracket that get's screwed down onto dash or console or somewhere else? Found it online at partsamerica.com part number VRBCS300.
Color Monitor is small but that can be a good thing. Attaches to dash w/stand or without it using supplied Velcro. Hey...that company should be paying me for all this advertising of there product. It had better be good now or I'm in trouble!
Wanted to thank you for the help, did as you said and the thing works great. I love it and so does my '03 F150 SuperCrew. Got switched lead from under hood fuse panel and also wired in lighted toggle switch installed on lower dash under cup holder. Monitor attached with Velcro on dash just right of steering. Surprised at how clear and much you can see behind truck. Wife is going to get one on PT Cruiser as soon as I pick one up. I would like to send pictures if that is possible.
if you just need the camera, get them on ebay. i think mine was like $27 and i upgraded shipping from hong kong for $13 (fed ex). had it in like a week
Sam's club has the camera and monitor for under a $100. Around here the cops call them cop cams. The cops claim that drug dealers use them to watch the cops behind them when they get pulled over. About the dumbest thing I've heard a cop say but then they will say anything to give something an illegal meaning.
