I just got my 06 f150 5.4 4x4 and I want to add a tranny gauge. If I could get some real world feedback on what gauge you have used ,where you placed it, and where did you put the sending unit. By the way I saw somewhere a gauge mount that went on top of the steering column. I believe it came in black and held one gauge. Anyway thanks in advance for any help.
I can't wait to read the replies on this... Why? Because I am thinking about such a gauge as well... We own a 24ft 5th wheel (5073 pounds dry) and it would make me feel better to know how the temperatute in the tranny is doing.
I hauled it to/from the blackhills in South Dakota without any issues at all, the engine temperature didn't even shown any sign of changes even in the bigger hills in 36 C temperature (97 F)
I have not installed one yet however I am planning on doing so and have done a bit of research ...
Prettymuch I am going to go with Autometer guages. I am going with a A-Pillar mount 3 guage unit...One for Tach (I have an STX), one for Tranny temp, And the other for Whatever I feel like ...In otherwords I havent decided yet. Anyway Autometer has pretty much everything you need to fit your truck.
Anyway...on the tranny guage....From what I understand...On the 05's there is a drain plug on the side of the tranny that you can remove and the sending unit fits nicely in there. If you dont have the Electronic 4x4 shift you can always use that handy coin holder in the dasy to mount your guage (little hard to see around the shifter but still a ver nice spot to mount).
ANyway as for the pillar mount I might go with one of these since I have yet to find one offered by AUtometer ( I will have it painted to match my interior)... Pillar Mount
I have an autometer tranny temp gauge that I mounted on the dash. It's all the way on the left side near the A-pillar. I used an autometer cup mount that's mounted to the dash and angled slightly toward the driver. For the sending unit I used a threaded hole in the tranny that had a plug in it from the facory. It's near the front of the transmission body on the driver's side, I believe it's 1/4"NPT. The Autometer sending unit fit it, so that's were I put it. I didn't go with the pillar mount since the tranny temp gauge is the only one I plan on using and the mounts I found were either 2 or three pods.

In the picture at this link, it doesn't show the grip handle on the pillar ... does the grip handle have to be removed to make space for the guage pod? I really need the grip handle for mounting and dismounting, even though I'm 5'10" and I have a running-board step.
I'm going with the following since it has the best match for the original Lariat guages, event he lighting is close. You can use a chrome bezel. I am installing in the black coin holder to the right of the wheel on the dash. It's the perfect size to install the guage.

Yeah unfortunately when using the A-Pillar mount it removes the grip handle for Entry/Egress. I do remember once while waking up in a drunken stupor early in the morning an infomercial that offered a product that slips into the door Jam Lock Bar to help with leverage...cant remember the name of the thing because I was Drunk...But I do remember seeing the Commercial...or at least I think I did...Maybe someone else can help....That might be an alternative to using the grip handle so you can get the A pillar mount
BruceFX4 - I like this set of gauges mostly for its location - Just an idea about the second gauge - perhaps an interior temperature gauge? It would at least occupy the hole... just a thought.
I installed one on my 2004 Truck. Put it where the coin holder sets in the XL/STX trucks or the 4X4 selector in the other models. There is a drain plug in the side of the tranny that the sender fits perfectly in and makes for an easy install. I pics of the guage in my gallery and if you do a search on the site someone else has pics of the tranny with the unit installed.
I had a tranny temp gauge in my 98 F150. I had to weld some threads to get the sender into the pan. However on my 2005 Fx4 their is a threaded hole which the sender fit into perfectly on the drivers side of the transmission. I am going to change the type of gauge that I had previously it was a Auto Meter Pro-Comp Ultra lite. The new gauge that I purchased is a Auto Meter Lunar Series. The gauges are green-blue by night to match the factory color. You other option is a set of Bully dog gauges with their Digital Morphin Controller which will change the gauges colors. To mount I will be using the following mount from moss which takes the place of the ashtray and is identical to the factory trim http://www.fordf-150store.com/Shop/V...&PlateTypeID=1
