'97 5.4 AOD torque converter ?

Just brought truck to transmission shop. Told him truck started shifting hard and seemed to be reving higher in O.D. He checked codes and it said that the cluthes are slipping in the transmission and that the torque converter needed to be changed, for the sum of $600.00. Does this sound right? If only the torque converter, filter and fluid need to be changed can the average backyard mechanic do this in a weekend?
