I went to change my air filter this weekend because the light came on in the dashboard and I found the sensor dangling from the wire. The clear housing broke off the black part that sticks in the filter end cover.
After changing the filter, pulling out/unplugging the broken pieces, I took them to the dealer because I have 34000 miles on the truck.
The dealer said it is common for it to get broken off by people grabbing it and breaking it while trying to remove the filter, and I would have to pay for a new one.
After a little conversation, he agreed to order one and I will have to bring the truck in and have a tech install it.
Has anyone else had that thing break off?

mine broke off on my 04, I didnt try to get them to warranty it as I knew they would say it was my fault even though I hadn't touched the thing. mine broke cleanly so I used wurth klebfix ( it's a structural adhesive from germany) on it and it has worked fine for 20,000 or so miles. just out of curiousity what was the cost on a replacement?
Mine did the same thing. Light came on. Guts were missing or I might have tried to glue it. The dealer warrantied it anyway. Not sure what caused it to fail but one thought I had was that my degas bottle was leaking pretty bad at the time. Could hot drops of coolant have caused it to crack? Just a thought.
That is a possibility. It did look like the plastic was dry and brittle. And my coolant overflow does look like it overflowed. Is that what you are talking about when you say the degas bottle?

Yep, "degas bottle", "recovery tank", "overflow bottle" same difference.
I think it is called "degas bottle" because it is mounted high above the engine to help keep air out of the system. Maybe someone more "in the know" could chime in.
Anyhow, it is almost directly above the air filter sensor so I thought my theory could be possible.
I bought my X used from the dealer himself, his wife's demo. My restrictor guage was missing during our pre deliverly inspection. Tghey said it was not uncommon and not to worry. I was concerned of raw air going into the turbo, the dealer said it wasunder warrantty, no worries.........
mine broke off on my 2003. I also found it after the dash light came on. I had to pay for a new one. Didn't like having to pay for it ($22.00) but it was worth it to get rid of that stupid dash light.....
kb1aah... Before I did the headgaskets and studs on my truck, I carried an extra one in my truck, as I had two of them come apart after being puked on by the DeGas bottle. I would run the truck hard, or tow hard, smell coolant, and, Voila! the air filter light would magically appear. Thankfully my Ford friends supplied them for me (truck still has only 30,700 miles on it) and the extra I have had for some time has not been used.
