I put new seals and new handles on my vent windows and I still have wind noise. For those of you out there who have had your truck since the begining of time , do these windows chronicly leak, or do I need to get quality seals?
I replaced mine also and they leak too. I finally tracked mine down to the little chrome levers being worn out. To hide/fix it I went to the HELP section at Autozone and picked up a set of those vent window locks to assist in keeping the window snug.
It sounds like either the shaft that holds the handle on the window frame is wallowed out or bent out of shape. or the chrome strip on the frame is grooved.
Does the new handles wiggle side to side? If so to fix this properly you will need to get a new window frame with new shaft etc...
If the shaft is bent you can straighten it out to where the handle will close the window more tightly...
a temporary fix is to put a nickle (5 cents) in between the handle and the frame to help it seal tighter.
Sticking nickels it there will fix it, but I would rather fix it right.
But if it's just going to get loose and start leaking again in a year, then I will just deal with it.
i just gave up. i used black silicone on the seal then shut the window. i never use them any way. i also got tired of people trying to stick their arm through and unlock the door.
I just now got all the weather strip glue off my hands from installing my big door seals tonight. They were some of the $28 Ebay specials which actually worked pretty well.
I've replaced all the strips and runs in my doors but the vent window seals. They were still in pretty fair shape but as mentioned my levers have a good bit of play especially on the drivers side. The vent window seals seemed to be pretty expensive was another thing that shyed me away from changing them. I guess I'll just do the change trick, turn up the stereo and drive on. Cheers!!
im with ford390gashog, i dont like the vent windows, mine never leaked or whistled, but i hate those windows in all vehicles. i never use them .i used black rtv silicone on mine to seal them closed.i will do the same to any vehicle i ever have that may have them.-billy
I think www.motorhaven.com sells the vent handle window kits which includes the new shaft (looks almost like the pin for a wiper blade) you might need. Please note that not all seal kits are equal. On new rubber or cab mounts I would tend to lean towards motorhaven or Dennis Carpenter.
I like JCW for a ton of things and have another $500 order arriving soon, I just know what to expect for certain things and quality rubber or sheet metal is not on the menu.
For you guys that never bought your truck new, Things like the truck getting broken into usually have bent frames and that causes air to leak through no matter how good the seal is.
I have replaced both sides of mine because they have both been bent by intruders.
I have bent the shafts back into shape by whacking them with a hammer, but be prepared for the possibility for one to break off, then you are back to square one.

How long ago did you replace them, have you had any problems with them leaking since then?
