Two SuperDuty Questions
Lately I noticed when I shut it off I can hear pinging every so often. I think it is the oil dripping back down into the pan or something, but now I can also hear it when I pull up next to something like a drive thru. What causes the pinging?
Second question. It feels like my truck has no ***** in reverse. I towed a 32' 8,500# travel trailer home 50 miles and the truck did decent with the 5.4 and all. Never had a problem getting to speed in a decent amount of time, and never had a problem keeping it there.. BUT.. when I tried to back the trailer up I was revving the motor a lot more than I should have been and I eventually ended up dropping it into 4-LO just so I didnt burn up the tranny.
I thougth maybe I had overheated it on the trip and just blew it off, but a few weeks ago I was moving a trailer about the same size at work and it idled it forward in drive, but when I put it in reverse there I was giving it a good amount of "MOVE" pedal!
Is the 4R100 naturally junk in reverse? I would think it should have the same amount of power in R and it does in D.
Thoughts anyone?
As for the reverse issue. The reverese gear in the 4R is slightly higher than the 1st gear in forward. You will have to add a little more pedal to it.
Don't forget, it is harder for your truck to PUSH weight, than it is for it to PULL weight. Think about a wheel barrow; is it easier for you to push it or pull it?
What R&P gears do you have in it? 3.73, 4.10, or 4.30? Best towing improvement you can make, if you need it, is to go deeper gears. Doesn't sound like you need it, but it's an option.

I am on the lookout for a PSD, but until I find one I will just baby this truck.
Just my opinion on this one, but to switch to 4.30's would run around $1000 and would be much better towing. And you will likely see the same mileage you are getting right now. Reason being, you put that 5.4 into a more useable power range and the tranny will shift a lot less.
Again, just an option.
