Cost Estimates

Does anyone have a good location to get general repair estimates?

I have to have my clutch rebuilt and/or replaced. I'm wonding what I can expect to pay. I know area's and overall work changes, but need a heads up for what I"m in for.

There has to be a place with general average costs.

If you post the info on your truck (year, model ,engine, and tranny) then tell us what parts you may need to fix/replace (or the symptoms) then I believe I can help you with that.

If it is a basic clutch disk, and pressure plate replacement then I believe I payed around $200 in parts for a 81 302, and installed it myself in the driveway in about 3 hours including the breaks and warm-up times (it was near the end of november with the freezing cold snow, that was a lot of fun).

Sounds like a slipping clutch to me, alright.

I paid around $550 to have mine done. It included the clutch disk, pressure plate, new flywheel, throwout bearing & pilot bearing. The kit is around $250.

If yours is a 4x4, expect to pay a bit more labor.

When I got into work today I looked it up in our computer, and this is what it said
(The prices it gives are the SUGGESTED prices for NEW parts.)

Engine 302 (5.0L) 351 (5.8L)

Labor 3.6 hours 5.2 hours

Clutch disk $98.85 $132.02

Pressure Plate $79.55 $79.55

Total $380.00 + tax $502.77 + tax
In our shop I believe we charge $56 per hour. So for the 302 it would be around $201.60 and the 351 would be $291.20. Of the 2 you most likely have the 302.

Why would it be 1.6 hours more to do a 351? They are basically the same engine. I know you're quoting book rates, but I don't understand why?

$180 is awful cheap for a clutch kit. I would hesitate on spending that much for a M5OD clutch. I got a luk clutch for $250, and it was not an actual Luk-branded clutch. It is an off brand that Luk makes.

Also, are you including resurfacing the flywheel in that?

In the computer it said that the 351 had the "heavy duty" so I believe it is talking about the zf, but I did not think they put the zf in the 150's. If it is not talking about the zf then I am not sure what the difference would be.

As for the parts, we almost never go by the book for the more expensive stuff, we usually find out were we ar going to be getting it from and then add on a percentage of that. Usually in our system the "sugested retail" is way off, and is talking about if we get it from the franchise (we get almost nothing from them).
