'96 E350 superwagon. got a bad skip and miss at idle. sounds like alternating dead cylinders. replaced fuel filter to rule that out and same thing. when you rev it up any past idle it smooths out fine. hooked up our Genesis (not familiar w/ yet) and got misfire code and egr code. hooked up my vacuum gauge to egr while running and it opens and shuts. now whether it shuts all the way i can't tell w/o pulling it off but it moves. sound like ignition? i thought fuel pressure regulator at first but it would do it through the whole rpm range if it were that. got any ideas? thanks
Run a compression test on each cylinder. I had something like this once on another type of engine and one cylinder read 70 lbs less compression that the others. It sounded horrible on idle but when I hit the gas it smoothed out. Turned out to be a really bad burnt valve. Remember this is an aluminum head so be careful on the plug threads and re torque them properly.
96 with a v10? shouldn't that still be a 460.
more then likly it dropped a coil pack try a new one on the missing cylinder. should be having codes of p0300 missfire and a p0301 up to to p0310 telling you which cylinder to go after with obd 2. try that tool out better it's one heck of a great one. i have the nemisys great tools
Gotta remember that the E-series got the V10 a couple of years before the Super Duty came out. I was thinking it was '97, but it might have been late '96. So, it could be a V10.
Hey captchas yes I have a 460 but have been on this forum daily for about two months trying to determine what to order for my next truck. Looks like the reasoning behind my last purchase still is true today. The only engine I now consider is the V10. It has been an eye opener for me because I thought the V10 would not deliver mileage as good as my 460. My trips to local dealers have produced no results. They laugh at my request to see a V10. They only want to push the diesels at you. It has been rewarding to hear the good things I read on this forum about the V10! My son has the 5.4 in an F150 and gets a solid 18mpg on trips. It does make sense that with only 2 more cylinders with this same modular engine would deliver 14mpg under optimum driving habits and circumstances. After tax time I will place an order for a new V10!

i was thinking the van not you, but i am very glad you have been listening to our talking.i will say you will find one problem with the v10 and your mpgs. and that will be your right foot just as i have found, probibly all off us really and that will affect your mpg's big time. as far as when you tow, you will be in for a shock about what it can and will do.
down to easy driving and no hot footing my best was 15. and that is better then the 4.7 mopar "sorry guys my mistake after a lemonaid 6.0 " that 4.7 would only get 11 tops not towing. and 9 city in a dakota on top of it.
wrench, fred and a few others sold me the rest of the way on a 6.8 and i will never look back again. and can never thank them enough for helping me order this way. besides i got a fully loaded truck and still had change for toys. thanks to them.
mopar thats a super bad word in my house now. just don't go there.
Hey captchas this forum has also caused me to start looking at all commercial F450's I see. You know the ones with giant tool boxes, compressors, lift buckets and all sorts of things used commercially. I see a substantial number the the V10! This thing is indeed a "mule for all applications."
yes indeed.
our snow plow contractor in my private lake area has a big fleet of 05 and 6's gave up all his psd's for them.
on tuesday we had 9 inches of wet white, they all plowed 24 hours non stop and not a one failed.
My 97 (4x4 Van) did the same thing...including lifter noise (one valve)and EGR noise. No codes either (Snap-on scanner). I, infact bought another engine as mine was "terminal." As a last ditch effort, we gave it a chemical tune-up. Fuel tank, direct injection of cleaner through the schrader valve, and additives to the oil. I drove it for one day...and it has been performing perfect since! Bought at 100K, problem at 110K, Now at 165K. My original mpg seemed to be in the 14 range (unloaded, freeway), Now it is in the 12 mpg range full time. Fuel cleaner about every 10 tankfulls. The original seller started useing 10-40 oil (Kendall), which may have started this, however. Now on Mobil1 5-20 & 5-30. Since then, many of my and neighbors vehicles have been "fixed" with the chemical tune-up. May help here....or a least remove some possibilities...cheaply.
believe me it's a v10. now since i was dealing with a problem only at idle, i began to look at the IACV. got a genesys reading on it and it ran opened from 36%-54%. i took the IACV off, cleaned and bench tested to find that the motor only pulled it about a 1/16". no good. got a new one from ford and installed today to find that it helped the idle alot but still has a bad miss and possible missfire. it has also stalled. next began to look at MAF sensor. took it off the van to find that the terminals are all in tact and appear to be in good shape w/o wooping out the magnifying glass. tomorrow will re-install MAF and take Gen reading on it and see what kinda frequency reading i'm getinng. any other ideas for what could cause and irradic idle but good high rpm? anything above idle is fine. engine has 127,000 on it. any ideas fellas? thanks
Did I miss it? Did you checks all the COPS? I've been through a couple of them already, pretty common symptom is the shudder at idle but okay at normal cruise.
by cops do you mean coil packs? didn't check 'em. but did find a major vacuum leak at the front of the throttle body. my boss is the one that found it and is in the process of repairing it. not sure where it leads to but the genesys finally spit out a vacuum leak code p1003 i think?? not sure anyways we'll see if this fixes her and we're throwing her first set of new spark plugs after 127,000!! i'll let ya'll know the result.
