Mainboard & Memory
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/produc...il.php?UID=411
For over a year ,I have been running 1 stick of 256MB & 1 stick of 128 MB itogether without problem
This last week , I have tried installing a stick of 512MB Pc133 Micron memory without success.
The computer won't boot up with this stick of memory in it.
I have tried several combinations of memory
The computer won't boot up with the 512 MB by itself
It won't boot up with 256 MB by itself
It won't boot up with 128 MB by itself
It won't boot up with the 512MB and 256 MB together
It won't boot up with 512MB & 128 together
It WILL only boot up with the 256 MB & 128 MB together and run fine.
The System Identifies the the 352 MB of RAM.
The Bios identifies the value of the memory sticks in slots 3 and 4.
I'm stumped

Today,
This is the second stick of 512MB I have tried..... thinking the first one was bad.
Same problem.
Any thoughts ?
Ask at best buy or local shop with all your info. They should be able to advise. Hope this helps.
They 1st thought the board couldn't handle that much memory then they saw the specs handles (2GB) worth.
Then they thought the Memory stick was bad.
Thus the replacement, still no go

I'm trying to do this on my own instead of driving 120 miles for them to look at the computer in their service dept.
To me this isn't a service dept situation
Also, maybe back the RAM timing down to normal or slow, and see if that makes a difference. Or, just set the RAM timing to "auto".
all pc-133.
This is the 512 MB stick.

This is the matching 256MB

Memory express was aware of the type of 256 MB stick before they sold me the 512MB stick as the 256MB stick was bought from them as well..
They stated they should mate fine.

I dunno why, but it sure looks like it wants nothing to do with it.
Can you trade it for a pair of 256 sticks?
My experience has been that you don't want to mix too many different kinds of memory sticks. Ideally you want them all the same.
You got away with a 256 and a 128, well and good. It should boot with the 256 IF IT IS IN THE RIGHT SLOT!
(I think it has to be the '0' slot, I could be wrong)
If everything is matched - 256+256+256 - it should run. It might accept the 128, but look to upgrading and matching it with the rest.
Once you go there, you can swap one at a time upwards to 512's.
It's hard to say, not knowing the least bit about the architecture of the board.
It take it you have four slots - look real hard at the connector layout. I ran into a problem with a new edge connector setup that won't take anything but brand new ram styles, but if that's the case it shouldn't be possible to fit it into the mainboard at all.

I'm thinking I may go to this DDR RAM instead.

Here is a link to its owners manual.

I can't use anything else, and until I have some I have a quarter cubic meter doorstop in my closet for lack of that last part.
200 gig maindrive though - I figured it would be full when whoever inherited it died...

they have this snippet in there: Important information about your system
Memory configurations for Windows 95/98/ME with greater than 256MB, require adjusting the Vcache settings as outlined by Microsoft article Q108079.
I agree w/ beeboy. Clear the BIOS settings and then try each one of them again.
Then again, DDR is getting pretty cheap.
maybe your mobo is just broken.
I'm going to replace my mobo and CPU soon, hoping to solve my burning issues
