OK gang, I am new to diesels. The E350 I just got has water in the fuel, and won't start. I know this sounds like a REALLY dumb question, BUT, how do I fix it? The van came without a manual, so I'm runnin' blind here.
This won't be the last lame question I assure you. LOL
On the same note: are additives such as "HEAT" or other H20 removers OK to use in a diesel? I use them once in awhile in my gas rigs.
There is a drain valve on the bottom of the fuel filter.
Open the valve and drain the water out.
Better choice would be to change the filter.
Fill the new filter with clean diesel fuel before you install it.
The engine may be hhard to start, crank for 20 seconds then let the starter cool off for a minute or two before cranking more. The starter does not like to be cranked very long, it will burn up.
Cool Dave, thanks. I saw the nut at the bottum of the FF and figured that's how, but wasn't sure. I'll go out and get a new one IF this rain ever stops long enough to get to it.
What's your take on water removeing additives? Would they help keep the water out after I change the filter?
High quality additives are ok don't bother with the cheep stuff. You did not mention how or how much water is in the fuel. If you think there is alot you will probably want to figure on a way to drain the tank. If there is less than a quart the way your going is ok, either way I would drain the filter water seperator each day or more untill all traces of water are gone. Hope this helps

I don't know how much is in the system. I got the van last week, drove it about 2 miles, and it ran great. I started it the other day and the light was on(dim), I let'er idle for a few minutes then shut'er down. Now the light is BRIGHT and it won't start. This is going to be a learning experience for me, I've been working on my own vehicles all my life, but this is a new chapter. I'm sure glad I found this site. Thanx guys.
This is one of the reasons you should only buy fuel at high volume places.
Also it is a good idea to keep the tank full during cold weather.
The return fuel line in the tank will heat the tank while driving. Then when it cools off moisture will be drawn into the tank and condense.
This is also a reason to stay away from places that only sell a little diesel every day.
Diesel Kleen is a good addative to run to keep the fuel system lubricated and clean.
The engine in your van is a very dependable engine.
They do have a few little quirks, but we can talk you through them.
