tire and rim question

hey all....i bought and 04 f-350 pd 6.0 about 6 months ago.....right after that i put on toyo nitto terra's, on the 16" rims that were on the truck, the tire mech said they were the biggest i could get.....
well, my friend has and 05 of the same truck and he put on 20" rims ,not sure of the tire size...
my question is this....what are the biggest rims and tires i can put on my truck without going crazy into modifying everything.....also, does anyone know the lug pattern, or specs?

The lug pattern on all 99 ans up super dutys is 8x170

16, 17, 18, 20 & 22 inch rims should all fit your 04 truck the 05 & 06 need 17 and larger to clear the larger rotors.

You may have to keep an eye on the backspacing if you go with larger than stock sized tires.

thanks stinkpickle, i still need more info though....when im looking at rims on the internet some say 20x10 20x12 20x14...which would i need, what do those #'s mean....?
also, what is backspacing and what do i watch out for because if im going from a 16" rim to a 20" im definitely gonna get bigger tires.....will this affect my handleing and gas mileage a lot? and what size tires would i get?

king244, 20x10 is the wheel dimensions, 20" diameter and 10" wide. Not sure about the backspacing. The 05 and newer trucks have different backspacing than the 99-04 trucks.

King: 10" seems to be the norm for 35's and 37's. Most tire manufacturers websites will tell you what size rim width you need for the tires you are looking at.
Larger tires will affect your milage and handling a little, but most find the better looks and off road capability worth the tradeoffs.

Tim: Thanks!

I put 18x10 Ion rims on mine with no problems. I have the nitto terra grapplers and love them. Mine are 355/65/18 (37x14x18) Coures I have a 6.5" lift but you could go with a smaller tire if you have no lift. The problem with a 16" rim is fitting over the brake caliper. My 18" have lots of room for the caliper.
