i have a 2000 f-250, V10 auto. where is the starter relay? i got the truck two weeks ago and have had nothing but problems with it, i go to start it last night to plow and found a dead relay. thankfully it was only a couple inches so i shoveled it, but we're getting up to a foot tomorrow into tuesday. so i deff don't want to shovel haha. thank guys.
Welcome to the site
Starter solenoid should be on the fender wall pass side behind battery..What are the symtoms? why do you think its the solenoid/relay?
i went over my parents last night, went to leave after a few hours, wouldn't turn over. the soleniod just clicked loudly. went back today, got under it, had someone turn the key while i hit the starter with a hammer, nothing. tons of juice, so its not the battery. hopefully i can swap the solenoid and it will be fine because i need to do this after work, and its going to be snowing already by then.
Don't just replace parts. Check the solenoid with a test light or short the two big terminals together that will simulate it working. Better to use a test light. Don't hit the starter hard cause its a permanent mag motor and you will ruin it. Check the big term on the starter for a light with key to start ,if you have a light you may need a new starter.
i'll check it with a test light before i toss in a new one. with the time frame i have to get it back running again, that better be the problem or i'm up a creek without a paddle. i'm just glad i can crawl right under the truck to work on it, its in a yard right now on the grass, so i'd be screwed if i had to jack it up.
i got out of work late and didn't get a chance to test it. i went to the parts store, they said they couldnt even get one. umm ok. i was told by a ford tech when i called it a relay, that it was a solenoid, ford's dont have relays. i check a ford parts site i use, it said the solenoid is on the starter, but have no listing for a relay?????
its not even a matter of testing it at this point, i can do that in 2 minutes. i just wanted to get the part, then take the trek over to my parents and test it, if thats whats wrong, swap it, if its the starter, bring it back under warantee. but right now, no one knows what the part is called.
If you need to start the truck, just look at the relay or solenoid or what ever.Turn your key to the on postion and touch the two bigger wires with a screw driver and it will start up.It will run till you turn it off.
The ford elec diag calls both relays. The one on the firewall sends a signal from the keyto the coil of the relay .the output of that relay goes to the starter relay on the starter as ford calls it to close the contacs of the main wire and engage the gear.
Color DB/O comming from key yellow lt blue going to starter.

i just never liked the idea of that haha. i've been shocked a bunch of times and i usually try to avoid it. i know its damn near impossible, but im a baby when it comes to electricity.

lol it will just be a little spark lol, just make sure you use a screw driver with a plastic handle.

sweet, thank you very much. the ford site i always use for parts had no relays listed for the starter. hopefully i get out of work tomorrow at a decent time and can test everything, make sure its the relay then go to the dealer. all the help is GREATLY appreciated.
