I am trying to inquire some info for a friend of mine who has a '98 F-150 with a 4.6L It seems the engine doesn't have that much power, he said it seems like it wants to stall out when accelerating and won't do much past 50 mph on the highway. I checked for codes two came up, P0301 and P0302, Fault cylinder-miss fire detected cylinder 1 and 2. He had his spark plugs changed, but it didn't help, infact it may have gotten worse. Anybody have any ideas what could be wrong? Does anybody know where I can get a diagram of the plug wires and firing order? I though maybe the plug wires got mixed up when changing the plugs? Any other ideas?
The diagram is free at www.autozone.com. They own alldata, the number one shop reference, so the infor is pretty good. Just enter the information about the truck and go to repair info. Click on Vehicle specifications, the look under F for firing order.
P.S.: Ford factory plug wires are crap. The act of removing and installing the current set probably damaged the insulation on some of the wires. Replace them.
Once you either fix the coil connection or firing order or confirm that it is okay, use a stethoscope to listen to the injectors on those two holes. You should hear a clicking. To know what they are supposed to sound like, listen to the injectors on one of the other holes.
If the injector is not clicking, remove the electrical connector and insert a noid light to see if it is getting a signal. If it is replace the injector(s) if it isn't run down the wiring harness and/or test the PCM.
If it does turn out to be the coils not connected correctly go back to the people that changed the plugs and have a serious meeting with them.
