Has anyone had experence with the gear vendors over under drive units on their trucks. I am thinking of put one on my 94 F250 ext cab with a 460 and E4od transmission.
No. You remove the output shaft housing of the transmission or the transfer case then install the over drive unit which will then act as a second transmission giving you up to twice the foward gears than stock. In other words you will end up with six to eight foward gears. This unit is basically a bolt on unit with no/or minor modifications. To learn more go to info@gearvendors.com
Not exactly what you're looking for, but I know a lot of the guys in my friend's Model A club run overdrive units to gain some extra speed. Never heard anything bad about them except that they make it easy to drive too fast for the steering/braking systems.
I have a Doug Nash overdrive unit in my 87 Crew cab. Nash was bought out by gearvendors. It works good, has tons of miles on it. It is a bit noisey in direct but quiet in overdrive. My cc has 4.11 gears in the rear and the overdrive helps cut the rpm. I don't know what you'd run into trying to put the overdrive behind the E4od as you already have OD in the tranny and adding one behind that might get interesting. Double overdrive?? Might work. That 460 will still get poor mileage. I really like'em but they burn gass just sitting in the garage.
Thanks for the replys. According to gear vendors the unit works fine on the E4od because it communicates with vehicle's computer , one testimonial states that a motor home running a 460 has gone from 6mpg to 9mpg using the the unit. My 94 ext cab gets 15mpg using a 4" exhaust with a K&N air induction system, Accel ignigtion module, cap, rotor and 8mm spark plug wires platnuim spark plugs along with an oil additive. The main focus of the overdrive unit is for towing and any mpg increase for the 460 is a bonus.
