prefered backlash is .012-.015, personally I like things just a little on the tighter side, and will run them as tight as .010, but if you run at .012 you will be fine.
I also have my rearend apart and I was wondering what everyone uses to pull the side carrier bearings, pinion bearings, and the axle bearings? I have a shop press to put everything back to gether but I'm not sure how you get them off. Also does anyone in or around spokane have a ring and pinion in 3.50 for a 31 spline that they would like to get rid of? Any help would sure be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob
Bob 3.50 ring and pinions should be real easy to find in a wrecking yard since they were the most common gear ratio used in F150 pickups. for the ring and pinion it doesn't matter on axle splines unless your looking for the entire assembly. If you can't find a 3.50 gear set or you want a really high quality one, email or PM me I have access to a guy that sells used nascar gear sets which are what I run in my race truck these are top of hte line gears that are polished, and some are lightened, and I can get them for $100+ shipping to you (I pick them up so no shipping to me) I normally don't do any advertising on here and don't run a shop or anything just offering to grab a set if you need them since I need to stop in the next couple of weeks to pick some parts up for myself.
As far as getting the bearings off I use a bearing seperator, and my press.
I cut the bearings off with a cut off wheel. The race gets a slit cut in it and then that will ease up on it's fit which allows me to drive the race off with a hammer and a punch/chisel.
This all means nothing if you have no way to reinstall the bearings. If you can't press the new bearings on then just take everything to a shop.
If you have a 3.50 then it should have a mark where the pinion should be lined up with the ring gear. if no mark one should nark before taking it apart. Since the 3.50 ratio is an even number the pinion will run in the same spot all the time where a uneven number will not, it will over lap its self.
If one takes a used gear apart one should measure the backlash it was at before tearing it down. All of these things should be done to prevent the gears from whining. A used gear set will be better set to a higher backlash than a tigther back lash.
