Electric Fans

Now that my truck's actually running, there is of course a long list of things I still have to do - install my high amp one wire alternator, put some thread seal on the oil pressure sender that's leaking, etc, etc. and everytime I go near the engine I spend most of my time trying to figure out how to get around the fan shroud and fan.

I know that most newer cars are running electric fans which would seem to open up a lot of space direclty in front of the engine. Anyone out there using an eletric fan? What the advantages and/or disadvantages? Do you remove your thermostate when running an eletric fan?

The advantage of electric fans is space, and you don't draw HP directly from your engine to run it. The disadvantage is that under heavy, sustained loads they may not flow enough air to keep everything cool. The disadvantage is cost. Also, you leave the Tstat in.

There's not room for an electric fan in my setup. You must not be running the little "tower" that gets the fan close to the radiator.

You can remove the tower and use grade 8 bolts to bolt the pulley to the water pump. Works just fine. I use an electric fan here and we see temps in the high 90's and the truck stays around 205 in slow traffic. Out of summer, no problems at all.

Can't remember the name of mine, but I got it at Advance Auto for about 40 bucks. It is set to start the fan at 210 and cools it down quick, then shuts down at 190. They have controllers where you can adjust the temp for about 20 bucks more.

Scamardo, did you get the fan from Advance Auto? Also how did it mount up? I have seen some elect fans that have plastic ties that hold it to the radiator. This doesn't seem like a good set up to me. Also did you see any difference in horse power and gas milage?

Well, actually is what i did to mount the fan, i took some 1/2 EMT conduit and put a 4 point offset so i could bolt it to the front peice offset back to the radiator and then bend it back, looks pretty neat.

I did the plastic ties. Holding on good. I would much rather fab up a better mount but more projects than time right now. The fan was given to me by a friend. It is a cheapie but does a real good job.

I didn't notice any real increase in HP, even if so, maybe all the benefit from it would have been about 5 hp. Mileage is hard to tell right now as I am breaking in a new one. Should get 13/16 city/hwy best case. These FE's aren't known for good mpg's, as you know.

The biggest benefit is that when sitting in traffic, the fan will suck alot of air through to cool it down. My flex fan wasn't getting the job done when at idle or in drive in bumper to bumper traffic. Motor was heating up to much.

ran one in a nissan 240sx in my younger days, and in a little motor like that, the lack of drag caused by the clutch fan was very noticeable, going to put one or two in my fe, and the stock ties are ok, large plastic flat with strip that feeds through radiator fins and backer is same size flat plastic. think mine were kinda like a zip tie, though i will fashion a bracket if i put in my truck

problem with them is unless you lucked into something the size of the radiator, the full suction or blow of the fan will be lost on the sides, so i'm looking into making a shroud to get full benefit.

oh yeah, get the thermostat, i kept forgetting to turn mine on in the nissan and i think i cracked the aluminum head, i might have a.d.d. lol

Thanks for all the input. Sounds like an electric fan will be in my future.

Just for curiosity - anyone running an electric water pump?
