Is this distributor original ?
If so, it may be wornout.
It needs to be removed and checked to see if the shaft wobbles slightly as this will cause problems with the opening and closing of the Points and the problem you are experiencing.
It doesn't cost anything to verify the condition of the dizzy, just time spent
You can use these specs listed for the 72 for the timing.
If you set the timing to 8 degrees BTDC and the problem still exists, the timing chain in that motor might have jumped a tooth. Some of the replacement chains really don't last very long.
well when i rebuilt it i made sure to use the solid steel gear not that plastic crap, but it still could have. but i have noticed something i have replaced the fuel linnes and the fuel pump itself last week, because i thought it might be a fuel problem to start with, and i notice yesturday while resetting the time and checking the firing, that the fuel filter will go almost completely empty then when you let off the fuel it will catch back up. think it might be time for a new tank and sending unit in the tank??
