HI could any one tell me how hard of a job it is to change the down pipe on my turbo I would like to get rid of the stock pipe for better flow the truck is a 96 250 could I expect bleeding knuckels or is it a simple job? thanks
You will have to get ALOT of saws all blades, and the DP is cast and realy tough. I used a Plasma cutter to hack the head off it, and to cut it into two pieces, then you wil have to bend the seam that is behind the heat shielding, so the new 3" doesnt touch it, I used a 12' 2x4 and bent it, some use a hammer, others use a porta power. I also suggest taking the hood off, for alot more room.
Well for now I would like to just use the stock exhaust I just got a tuner and would like to use it but I have a budget I figure if I at least change the crappy down pipe I can use the tuner at its lowest setting safely until I can aford the rest of the exhuast
I would recommend getting rid of the down pipe and the cat. Also install gauges(at least EGT and tranny temp, if auto) before adding a lot of power with that tuner. Here's a lick for replacing the down pipe. You can skip the part about wrapping it.

well since your on a budget and i feel like im in the giving mood why dont you enable your private messaging for fte and send me one..........i got a gift for you.......
I was going to get the EGT gauge next after I change the down pipe I will feel a bit better when that restrictive pipe is gone because superchips claims I can use my stock set up for the lowest setting(tow safe) I tried it the other day and it seems to me that the stock pipe is just to restictive for the extra boost thats too hard on that poor turbo
You may get lucky with the new down pipe. After I cut my old one out (not as bad as it could have been), I dropped the top half of the new down pipe intp where it should go and jiggled it around from under the truck. Amazingly, it dropped right into place with no seam bending or other mods.
As far as the first mod to make, no question, the down pipe. After that, get the gauges installed and then build up from there.
yeh I know the pyro guage is important but I dont tow with this truck its my daily driver I dont plan to hit the 1/4 mile with it I would just like a bit more power to me the best thing I can do for this truck is get rid of the crappy down pipe when I can spend the cash I will get the rest of the goodys and try out the other two programs on my tuner thanks for the info 1997F350 how do I enable my private messaging?
FWIW, my '96 has the stock DP, with straight exhaust and with my Tipton tuned PCM, I had a REAL hard time breaking 1200º, and could tap 23* boost pulling the bobcat.
what I am getting at is the stocker isn't that bad unless you have injectors, then it will become a problem.
