Question 1995 E150 conversion van voltage spike...

1995 Van w/5.8L and 187K+ miles. I noticed my headlights were getting brighter last night on the highway. This was intermittant and the battery gauge would peg to the right during this. Is this a voltage regulator problem? If so, is there a step by step way to replace the regulator on the alternator without frying anything? Thanks!

could be the regulator or bad diodes. a new alternator comes with the regualtor.

Doesn't that have an external voltage sense wire? If it's disconnected won't the alternator go full on?

Sounds like your alternator is on its way out.

Voltage spike..............

Since my last post it remains intermittant. Drove about 40 miles last evening with no spike. In fact I did notice while at the post office idling that it (the battery gauge) flicked down a couple of times instead of up but that was all for the trip. Otherwise the gauge remains rock steady at the level it always has. I'm still wondering if some transmission fluid may have dripped down on the alternator would affect this. For some reason Fords "better idea" includes positioning the tranny fluid dipstick tube directly over the alternator. As far as I can uncover this battery is coming up on 4.5-5 years old also. Whats a good price for a voltage regulator? My nearly worthless Haynes manual seems to indicate these vans may have multiple alternator applications. Is there anyway for an automotive electronics challenged person to tell by looking at the alternator from behind with the (doghouse) engine cowling off?

Yes it has a Yellow/White Striped sense wire that runs from the splice at the fuse links to the "A" terminal of the Regulator.

Yes the Alternator will go full on if the sense wire is disconnected while charging.

He could try running a small wire from the battery POS (+) terminal and splice it in at the alternator near the "A" terminal. Might want to put a fuse in this wire.

The Regulator comes right out by unscrewing the small torx screws. When you put the new one in (if you change it) it also holds the brushes, so replace the brushes also.

Regulator...........

With the intermittancy of this problem should I look for a loose wire at the regulator? It hasn't spiked in the kast few days/50 or so miles.
