I got a 1977 F-150 Explorer 2x4. Its got the factory 460. Mine was the "lesser" Custom base model. So it doesn't have a stripe down the side or a cool headliner. Its got a plastic type of headliner, carpet, hood ornament, and a TON OF PEP!!!

Dennis-I would greatly appreciate some pictures of a 1977 Explorer.Yes,I am taking it to a professional to have it tape-striped to original.I was going to have them painted on but my bodyman recommended tape-stripes.I had made stencils of the stripes but the bodyman accidently threw them out!I will furnish my E-mail address and thank you very much.

Hey, Kenmt, I see that you have a zf 5 speed behind your Modified. How did that swap go? Do you have anything written up about it? I am interested in the availability of overdrive in my old truck.
Thanks!
Matt
Weldman- Putting a ZF 5 speed into my 77 F150 4X4 was not an easy chore. The modifications necessary to mate the transmission to the 205 and to retain the manuel clutch linkage weren't terribly difficult. The clutch itself, was a different story.I think we are getting kinda far away from this post's subject but I will tell you this. Was it worth the hassle? You betcha! I've toyed with the idea of formulating a tech article for this forum but not sure.I can tell you this-I didn't have to shorten/lengthen my driveshafts or install a hydralic clutch.I've had it in my truck for 3 years and it still works great. At that time a rebuilt 460 ZF here in Montana was going for $1500 + $500 core.I havent priced them lately but I figure the cost will probably turn people off right away.If you are still interested Weldman, why don't you start a new post and I'll fill you in some more.
I had a 1976 with the Explorer package. Hood ornament, hood and side stripes/decals etc. Thought they were only made in the later 70's but by the sounds of the other posts, they had them before that.

Out of curiosity, what years where the F150 Explorers made?
Seems to me the explorer was a promotional package based on the custom trim level. The 79 I had a couple of years ago had the Custom 150 n/plates, stripes with no side chrome and the hood ornament. It also had carpet, 460, tilt, slider window, limited slip, roof lights and the deluxe chrome headlight doors and grille. If you can't find a Lariat, these are the next best thing.
I didn't realize it was an option on the Ranger, too. The only ones I've ever seen here in Alberta are based on the custom level. Have to keep my eyes open more, I guess. I believe this package started about 68-9 and ran until the mid eighties.
I have a 78 Explorer F250 400 2WD. The door panels are faded but not cracked, the carpet is gone, the headliner is cracked due to a dent in the cab top from a tree limb (fell during an ice storm), the seat upholstry is ok but the seat support is failing. The old brown paint is weatherbeaten, and a few rust spots show thru. The stripes are faded but mostly intact.... My question is: How do I refurbish that hood emblem when I rebuild this truck? It has a few corrosion spots on it. How do I restore some luster to the old aluminum trim and get the dents out? Should I change the color of the truck? The brown is Uuglee, but changing the color is a lot of extra work striping everything down to bare metal for paint and never seems to look quite factory. Old truck is in pretty sad shape, engine is very tired, but I bought it to fix up.
