you can wire it using your ford solonoid , or the same as a chevy , Ive heard that if you wire it to the ford solonoid it lasts longer and is the simplest way to do it .but ive never done it . I do konw that some chevy guys use ford solonoids . I'm sure here in a few minutes others will chime in , bob
I would go ahead and keep the Ford solenoid, just for convience reasons. You won't have to buy any new battery cables, and the Ford solenoid is where most harnesses pick up the 12v to run the whole electrical system.
I would get some jumper cables, and test the new starter on the ground before you put it in. You should have two large studs on the new starter.
Put the + jumper cable on the top large stud. The bottom stud should have a connection to the motor part of the starter already.
Hook the - jumper cable to the metal housing of the new starter.
Hook the jumper cables to the battery. Nothing should happen, so leave them on there.
On either side of the large stud where you connected the + jumper cable, you should have one or two small studs. One of them may be labeled "s". Take a small piece of wire or a screwdriver, and connect the large stud with the + jumper cable on it, to the "s" terminal. The starter should turn, and the gear should pop out of the end that goes to the flywheel.
If that all works, and you are going to use the Ford solenoid, go ahead and make a permanent jumper from the large + terminal on the new starter, to the "s" terminal of the new starter. Test it one more time by hooking the + jumper cable to the large terminal, and the - jumper cable to the housing. Hook the - to the battery, and just touch the + jumper cable to the battery. Everytime you touch the + jumper cable to the battery, the gear should pop out and the starter should kick over.
It will then be ready to hook up just like the Ford starter, with the large cable from the Ford solenoid going to the large + terminal on the new starter.
