Rough engagement with C4

I have a '72 F100 with a 302/C4. The idle speed is set at about 650 rpm but I still have to grit my teeth when putting it in drive or reverse from park. It hesitates for a fraction of a second and then engages hard. The U joints seem to be OK.

Also, does anyone have experience with putting a slightly high stall converter with this conbination. The engine is stock but I was planning on putting a 4 barrel, dual exhaust, and cam in. I would seem to me that a slightly high stall speed would make the truck a little easier to live with in stop and go traffic.

Check the routing of your vacuum lines the modulator on the tranny should be getting manifold vacuum(below throttle plates) not vacuum from above the throttle plates. I switched these to try a different amount of vacuum advance for timing and when i would put it in reverse or drive it would slam into gear and kill the motor. Probably something to check out.

Ok I'll check out the vacuum thing on my trany. Thanks

So how does your combination work...lots of power? Does the Edelbrok cam/carb/intake work well together? What would you change if you were to do it over? Are you running the stock converter?

Compared to the stock 120 some horsepower theres lots more power. Gets up to speed alot easier. Between quarter and half throttle gives me the same amount of accelleration as full throttle used to. I figure its running about a 17.9-18.0 in the quarter mile right now. My only regret is that I wish I would have had a big block to work with instead. I cant use the powerband to its full potential yet because of the stock heads. Edelbrock says with there heads your redline is about 5500 with the performer package and im not going to push my heads past about 4500 because of stock rockers and valve springs.

I forgot to say I am using a stock converter.

Sedric,
This maybe your rear end thats clunking. Reference the "clunk" string.
A stall converter will make huge gains for the little small block that could. Stall should be 2000 RPM or more. A big stall won't work without the HP.
Go to a single plane four barrel intake with a large 750 holley. Add headers with 2- 1/2" collectors plus 2-1/4 duals back. Get a 290 degree duration cam with about a .456 lift (cam dynamics) and you'll have a very streetable performer.
Get a credit card, you'll need it for gas.
