Ranger electrics help

I have gotten some doors off a 97-8 ranger to install in my 94. I am having problems with the window motors. I cannot get them to run even when hooked direct to a battery!

The wiring diagram has several relays which I do not have but I need to know why they will not run direct? I have tried to wire thru the bundle via the master switch but get nothing on either motor. 12v exists at the switch at the connectors and at the motor but nothing happens. Motors will turn free if pulled apart, the regulator works when apart but nothing when reconnected. there are approx 5 wires involved from the switches. I plan to wire in a relay so they only work when the key is on, but I want to confirm they work prior to pulling my old doors apart.

anyone have any ideas? Also am going to try and wire the elec door locks and the electric mirrors, but they also show extra relays I dont have, are they really necessary?

Thanks in advance hank

If you wire directly to the motor, and it will not work, I would take a voltmeter, and set it to ohms rx1. Touch the meter leads together and make sure the needle moves and adjust it for zero reading. Then take the meter leads and read across the motor wires. You should get a reading. If you do not, then there is something wrong with the motor. The brushes may be stuck inside or something.

You definitely need the lock and window switches. They are pretty fancy in that they switch the polarity of the window motors and the door lock motors to make them reverse.

You do not need all the other relays. If you want to let the windows work all the time with the key off, you do not need a relay there either. If you do want them to cut off with the key, then yes you will need one relay to kill the power feed.

All the other relay mess was for the fancy features you get with the newer vehicles, the main one being how you can turn the key off, and still work some of the power accessories till you open a door, or after a time limit, and also to integrate key fobs and alarm systems into the power accessories.

I got them to work by wiring to the 2 wires on the motors. connect one way and they will go up/down, reverse the connection they reverse direction. They are electrically grounded thru the master switch which I was not using.

Now need to make a simple wire harness and begin the install which will probably be next weekend as I have friday off.

I did get the complete doors all panels and switches, speakers etc. Now need to figure out if these are remote locks or just electric locks manually controlled.

thanks for the reply.
