lowest temp cold start?

Just curious on who has had some real low temps (say -25F or so) and have been able to start their PSD WITHOUT using the blockheater. I've read about one gent starting successfully at -10F.

started mine up in maine last winter after a night of -20 f.... i cycled the glow plugs twice also and i am using mobil 1 syn 5w-40.. it started fine, but i wish i could have pluged it in for a couple of hours first... she took a LONG LONG time to warm up as well... but i let her run for almost an hour before we left... it ran on high idle the whole time but it was nice and warm when we got in it to go..

-28 it took about 7 cycles and did not like it had to keep starter cranking while first lighting for about 30 sec but it finally caught and stayed lit made neat noises until the other fluids (p.s. trans etc.) warmed up.

Damn, where are you guys from?> Where i live it is either hot or hotter!! It snowed here last xmas which was a record setter. First time in 100 years. I am still kinda worried cuz my truck does the "hiccup" when the temp gets to about 75. She starts easy, but does that rev from 700 to 1200 and the only thing i can do is hit the pedal, and it brings her out of it! I am gonna change over to synthetic oil, cuz i have read and heard so many good things about it with these trucks. My wife gets mad, cuz she is "the other woman".

Thanks again KWIK, that filter was genius!

I think i should not have put the lucas in my girl.. I had them put a gallon of lucas in on the last oil change and that is when she started doing the "hiccup". F**k it, i am gonna give the synthetic a try and see what happens.....

Good gosh!! I saw the title to this thread and was expecting to see some themps in the teens or near zero. But some of you have started your PSD in sub-zero weather without a block heater!?!? That's truly amazing.
I guess my measly 8-10 degrees doesn't mean much is this thread.

I've started mine lots at -20f. I had to start it a couple of times last winter at -30 when the power went out in our pipeline construction camp in northern Alberta Canada. It growled a bit but it did go.That was with 0w40 esso synthetic and cycling the glow plugs three times

coldest i have seen was -32 f.... started my old chevy 350 v8 gasser... that truck was a piece of junk, but that motor was awesome... i really got a good one... none of my family's vehicles started that day, i had to jumpstart everyone..! i'm sure my psd would start in that kind of cold if i cycled the glow plugs enough, but i wouldn't want to start it unless i had it pluged in... it just starts so much easier when it's pluged in and so much less stress on everything and so much less NOISE when it starts..! btw... is there a big difference between 0w-40 and 5w-40...? just curious..

I've started my truck consistently in -40 weather in the winter time up here for years. If its plugged in it will start every time at that temp.My truck is a welding rig, and I have the coolant lines hooked in to the welder, so if the truck won't start and the welder will,I just turn the taps on to the truck and it will warm it up so the truck will start. It also works that I turn the taps on in the morning so when I get to the job , I just flick the switch and the welder is up to temp. ready to go to work with out a real cold start.
