I just purchased a sweet 1974 F-100, 4x2 styleside, 360, automatic with just over 27,000 original miles. I'm going to start out with replacing all the fluids, hoses, and normal tune up items, plus a carb rebuild. I also need to fix an exhaust leak between the passenger-side exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe. It's been a long time since I've had a vehicle that is so simple to work on (last was a 1973 Maverick, my first car), and I have a question about the transmission that I can't seem to answer.
The sticker (it was in the glovebox) says that the tranny is a cruise-o-matic, but the Haynes manual (crap that it is) doesn't mention what fluid I should use. It does mention the C6 transmission (uses Dexron/Mercon), and then it says all others use Type F. Is the cruise-o-matic considered "all others?" What transmission fluid should I use?
Yup, the tranny dipstick does say to use f-type fluid. I figured that cruise-o-matic was just the "brand name" for the C6 but I couldn't find a reference to that anywhere.
Mark the Cruse-O-matic is one of the older FMX trannies. The C6 is a tranny family just like the C4, C3, C5, AOD, EAOD. Just something else to keep up with, right? :-)
