please allow me to vent for a sec. Unrelated as this is, but I bought a 1966 bronco from the local junkyard here in MN with no title. The dmv lady gave me a ton of paperwork to fill out and said I needed a written statement from the previous owner. I said it was from the junkyard. She said it didn't matter, & that I needed a written statement from the PO. Needless to say I had no luck getting a title, the project was scrapped, and I ended up $500 bucks in the hole. Now my 48 I bought didn't come with a title either, but I haven't tried yet. So these title companies you all are talking about..are these state-by-state, or what?

IMHO the junkyard WAS the previous owner.
Basically what the title suppliers are selling are titles to vehicles that have been scrapped that are the same year and model to the vehicle you are trying to register. You change the VIN# on your vehicle to match the one on the paperwork. Depending on your state this can be a grey area procedure to totally illegal. Coddington got in trouble on two counts, he was using the title for say a 34 Ford and applying the numbers to a totally handbuilt vehicle like a Boydster and claiming it to be a 34 Ford. The state said that was fraud because the Boydster had no/little connection to any original 34 Ford, and was being done to circumvent the state inspection and certification requirements of a newly manufactured car.
If you get to where you "really" need a title, PM me. I would be happy to help you out. I've done one here in Texas, it's not necessarily the cheapest route but it's a legal route and you can rest assured that it won't come back to bite you in the rear end later. For now, make sure you have pictures of your truck in unrestored condition. You will need them later for the appraisal.
