Fuel line problem?

Hello to everybody, new to the forum but I can see it's good stuff and I need some help, please!

Here is my story in a nutshell (like it's ever that easy) '03 F350 7.3L, I had a oil leak from the hi-pressure pump, the fitting was loose and was able to handle it no problem, execpt I had to remove the fuel line from the tank into the fuel filter housing in order to tighten the fitting.

Since then I have been sputtering at around 2K to 25K RPM, and have the occasional stall when I return to idle. But then starts again no problem.

I figure I have introduced some air into the system by doing this and the sputtering would go away after the air was expelled, then the stalling came and the continued sputtering and now I realize there is a problem.

My question: is there a gasket or something else I missed when I removed and then replaced the fuel line fitting? I thought I was carefull and I did not see anything fall when I removed the fuel line but obviously I am sucking air from someplace and this seems the obvious place to start. . .

Any thoughts or help will be appreciated greatly. . .

Thanks Josh

Welcome to the Ford Truck Enthusiasts forums jrazky.

How long has it been since the maintenance was performed?

cookie,

Like I said never as easy as it sounds.. .

I did all the regular maintenance (oil+filter, air filter, and fuel filter) 3 days prior, that's when I sprung the oil leak.

I checked the fuel filter and gaskets and they are good to go. I have 50K miles on the truck

thanks for the response

Check & clean the connection at the IPR and IPS. One is on the back side of the fuel filter housing drivers side. The other is in the drivers side head toward the front.

I agree. Three days of operation is more than enough to clear the air from the fuel and high pressure oil systems. Start be checking every electrical connector you can find around the area that you were working on.

You guys rock for responding, help a brother out and tell me how to check and or clean the IPR and ICP? I am not stupid, just no mechanic. . .

How do I test all the electrical connections? What am I looking for?

Do you think it's an electrical problem? It seems like way to much of a coincendence I removed a fuel line and now I could be having electrical probs. . .

UGGGH!

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you two responding, thanks.

Maybe, but with your electric fuel pump the air you introduced into the system was purged almost instantly, so you almost have to look elsewhere for the problem.

My thoughts are perhaps you damaged one of the electrical connectors in the area. Bent a pin, or pinched a wire, or something to that effect. Just disconnect them and make sure everything looks up to snuff.

Also, in the event that there is somehow still some air trapped in system....take it out for a bit and drive it hard...really get after it. That will eliminate pretty much any possibility of a air problem from something you did.

Are you getting a check engine light when it's sputtering?

Ok, I will start checking the electrical, I have not gotten a check engine light yet.

So there is no gasket, o-ring or anything else to seal the threads on the fuel line?

Yeah there's a gasket there. But there is no way that air is getting introduced to the system there because it's under pressure, not a vacuum. If you had a leak there it would be leaking fuel out, not allowing air in.
I agree, look at the electrical connections. They are the little round plugs held down on one side with a plastic retainer clip. They are all about 5/8" in diameter.
