Cam Position Sensor Problem

Cam Position Sensor Problem
I have a F-150 w/4.2 engine. The service engine light came on and the engine has been running a little rough. Auto Zone checked it and the code read "Cam Position Sensor". We are trying to replace it and came up with a problem:
The CMP magnet was broken off and loose inside the hall-effect vane. Apparent damage and many chips are inside. The vane appears bent at the leading/trailing edges. Any suggestions? Will it run without the CMP in place, at least temporarily(Can't understand how it's been running as it is now.)? Are we in a special tools area, and what other parts might we need? Anyone know of an on-line site with diagrams or pictures of what we should be seeing?

jfrent,
Welcome to FTE and the 4.2 forum! Glad to have you here.
Sounds like you have a mess on your hands.
I wish I could help but just don't know a lot about the cam sensor particulars.
Try doing a search of this forum for cam sensor and see what you can find. I know there have been a few threads here in the past dealin gwith problems with the cam position sensor.
I'd suggest a Haynes or Chiltons manual. That'd probably be a big help.
Best of luck and hope you stick around.
