High Oil Pressure

I have an '86 150, with a 302 efi from a '91 Crown Vic. Same motor that was in there. I just swapped the motors out and ever since, My oil pressure is running a little on the High side. The needle stays about on the "A" of normal. When I swapped the engines out, I put in a new High Vol. oil pump and had to swap the oil pans so that it would fit my truck.
I'm sort of stumped on this one. It's a new one to me.
Thanks.

did you use the sending unit for a 86 or the 91? the one from the 91 will throw the gauge off.

I can't remember exactly what the oil sending unit looks like or where it is.

Is that the same thing as the Oil pressure sending switch? the can looking thing with the stud coming off the top? IF so, then it's the one off of the '91. I didn't realize that it would give different readings.

Yes, sending switch and sending unit mean the same thing.

So that one will give off a bad reading then? So, all I do is buy a new one for a '86 150 instead of the '91??

High Oil Pressure

My 347 stroker with a high volume oil pump ( melling) runs exactly as you describe with a mechanical gauge it equates out to 50 psi consider yourself lucky read other posts of little or no oil pressure. if your concerned hook and keep a mechanical gauge I have both mechanical and the stock Ford dash gauge. i keep the dash gauge for sentimental reasons.... like comfort food it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling to know it at least works LMBO

You want the one that goes with the vehicle, not the motor.

Thanks, I was getting worried. I was just waiting for something to blow. That takes some pressure off of me too.

Yeah, My old motor had the little or no pressure problem. I know all about that. I once had a guy at a Super Lube tell me that the reason for the low pressure is because it's an old truck and they all just do that. I told him, "Yeah, alright. Thanks, that makes me feel better" That your actually working on my truck. ha

Why not just take the sending unit off the old motor and put it on the new one? I assume the oil pressure gauge was working before the swap.

well, there's no way to be sure if the old one was good. I mean, I don't think that it worked properly before, or it was always low pressure because of the leak. But it has been sittin for 2 1/2 years. Plus, That motor is back in P'cola and I'm in J'ville. It would probably be better if I just bought a new one.

I'm pretty sure all the '80s Ford truck oil pumps have a built in pressure relief valve that limits max pressure to 60-65 psi which on my '83 460 makes the gauge read about center of Normal.

Then there's the issue of whether the threads are the same between both units.

Note: Oil pressure SWITCHS are associated with the red idiot lights, while oil pressure sending units go with gauges. Two different animals.

Everyones NORMAL stock gauge reads different PSI's at the same spot in the gauge. That is one of the reasons ford didn't put numbers on the gauge as they would have correct every gauge. I run the stock gauge and a AFT MK gauge. When my stock gauge is off of the word Normal and almost pegged it is only 40PSI on the AFT MK gauge.

74F250,
If your stock gauge is reading way high then you most likely have a bad sender, a bad gauge or somebody has misadjusted the gauge calibration screw (on front of gauge-you have to remove the cluster front panel, lens and black gauge faceplate to get to it). You don't think someone substituted a sending switch for a sending unit do you? For a quick check of the gauge and wiring substitute a 10 Ohm, 10 Watt wirewound resistor (available from Radio Shack) for the sender. The resistor should make the gauge read at the high mark. If it doesn't, the gauge, or wiring, or Instrument Voltage Regulator (IVR) is likely bad (or possibly a bad ground between engine and cab). If it does, replace sending unit. P.S., if fuel and temp gauges are also reading high, suspect the IVR. OBTW, I've got a cheap aftermarket mechanical oil pressure gauge (in my junk box) that takes about 14 psi to move the needle off zero but it does pretty well from about 40 psi and up (as compared to a Stewart-Warner mechanical gauge).
