I think one of the reasons I got a little better then 16mpg was the 4.10 axle ratio I have. Cruising along at 70mph pulling my 14ft enclosed snowmobile trailer last week I was only turning 2100 RPM. It must put the motor in a more optimal powerband.
The trip where I got 19.2 MPG I was virtually empty as far as my truck was concerned (two guys, hunting gear for the weekend, and some plywood under the tonneau), I kept the speed from 60 to 65, with an occasional pass to 70 mph. The thing that floored me was that there were only 400 miles on the truck at this point!
I don't know how you guys with 5.4's are getting the mileage your getting (18-19 MPG).
I'm a pretty conservative driver and I just got 16.5 on a recent trip that was 95% highway.

Using my scanguage I show that I can get as much as 20 mpg. (straight level roadway with no headwind) The most important factor is speed. 60-70 mph and the fuel mileage is up there in the 18-20 mpg range. Hit 75-85 and it's gone! I took a trip over the new years and got 16.8 on a 400 mile run. The same run at no more than 70 mph and I can get 17.5-18.

mine is 5.4 with a 3.73 and tonneau. screw and 4x4. i've gotten 17 with 95% highway towing 2 jet skis. mostly 14.5 mixed driving. my v6 4runner got 14.5-15 mixed driving and towing, was a dog, and very small in the back (compared to my 5.5' screw bed).
but i usually drive 70-80. towing - i usually go 60;70 if i have to pass someone.
Right now my 4.6 4x4, 3.55s all highway at 65-75 with overdrive averages 15.5 on its best day, 13.5 on its worst. and about 10 around town.....i hate it...
That's calculated. Mileage between fill ups 281.4, amount pumped 16.1 (with 3 auto shut-offs from the nozzle). I have used the same gas station and pump for the last 2 fill ups.
That's 17.47 per gallon. The truck only has about 1200 miles. I'm light on the accelerator since the truck is new. 70-75 MPH on the highway. Around town is stop and go, 35-45 MPH speed limit. It's about 50/50 split town and highway. I live in Florida, so it's flat, not many hills around here.
I will admit, I have not really gotten on it, yet. Nor have I towed my trailer, yet.
I hope the mileage will improve some, as the miles add up.
So far, I'm happy with that.

I just bought a 04 Supercab FX4, 6.5' bed, 5.4L, 3.73LS, 31,000 miles, all stock except 3" exhaust with IMCO performance muffler. Only 2 tanks of gas since I bought the truck, 1st---15.06 mpg, 2nd---14.1 mpg. Both were mixed city/highway, but the first tank did have more highway than the second. I am very happy with the mileage so far, if it gets better great! But I was also used to getting 10-11 with my 94.
These trucks can get fair mileage. I towed my race car & trailer to Phoenix, Az. area & back to Bay Area & averaged 14 mpg for the whole trip, (13.997 to be exact). I was very pleased to get that towing.
I dont care what any expert says, I get better mileage with my tonneau cover installed. It has proven the same on every truck Ive ever owned. As for upgrades, a catback swap is always nice. You can skip the filter upgrade, since the OEM provides enough flow, and superior filtration. The mod that provides the most power increase (as well as mpg boost for me) is a tuner. I had a Superchips on my 04, and I gained 1.5mpg. I cannot say you will gain the same, but it sure worked for me.
What is your guys experience with cab high shell vs. tonneau cover?
Ive never run a high shell (like a cap?). I only run tonneaus. They are way more convenient for me. Ill get some pictures of my new Extang unit on my 06 up in the next few days. It provides the best of the vinyl tonneau, with some great features of the hard fiberglass style.
To all of you guys getting this great mileage with the 5.4, what the hell do you do to coax that mileage out of it? I'm not complaining about my mileage, but if there's a way to use less fuel i'd entertain it. My airaid mit and magnaflow exhaust did not seem to help mileage either. Right now 11-12.2 is my average mileage with mixed driving city highway. Long road trip best of 16.3. 2004 FX4 EC built 6/04. thanks.
even though i didn't buy it for gas mileage, here's my .02...
I have an '05 S'Crew w/ a 4.6L, set the speed control at about 67, and I get about 19mpg...which I think it totally awesome...35psi in the tires, stock filter and intake, stock exhaust, the only problem is that you will get passed by every car on the road...
