Keys with chip and remote entry

Just bought a 2000 Expedition yesterday but I only have one key and one remote. I saw the remotes on e-bay and other sites for $16 thru $25. What about the key with the chip from Ford ($25). Does a Ford dealer have to program the key ($80) or can I do it myself? I read the manual and I need to program the keyless door entry as well, but I need to locate the original code. Manual says it should be taped to the computer.

The dealer has to program the second key. You have to have 2 keys to program the third. You can buy the remotes and keys from Ebay. I did. Home Depot cut my keys free. I already had 2 keys.

I had a local locksmith do my second set or keys and remote (only got one when i bought) way cheaper than i woulda got from dealership and programed the second set of keys/remote too no sweat. Scout around and see if a local shop does em. Shoot if one out here in small, one horse town New mexico can do it. think of wherever you are at. Cause believe me its cheaper than dealership or waiting for ebay.

Many locksmiths have the equipment to program the second key, the dealer no longer has the corner on this market. The "pellet" inside the key is an RF ID transponder--not exactly a "chip"--in case you were interested.

I have yet to see a locksmith charge more than the dealer and I find that a trip to the locksmith is much faster than going through the dealer/paperwork thing.

I bought my keys off eBay (one with a Lincoln logo and a few clear ones) and took them to the locksmith to have it cut and the second key programmed.

on my oo I had a remote starter put in in 01. it needed a key under the dash to fool the system thinking a key was in the ignition to start. For programming as I remember you need all keys with you
1 put the key in the ignition and turn to access but do not start.
2 remove and repeat with all the keys with no more than 5 sec between
3 try to start with each, if one does not work see 1 and 2 untill the start the car.
4 this is not worth $80
