Auto lamp switch

I just purchased my 01 Eddie Bauer Expedition and the headlights will only come on when the switch in manually operated. Can anyone give my advice on how to trouble shoot the switch or any other advise to remedy this problem. The Hayes manual has a wiring diagram different than my switch.

you have to place the switch in auto on which is all the way to the left.

I guess I should have said that I did that to no avail. As stated it only comes on when I turn the *** all the way to the right.
