My power steering pump is leaking and making a groaning noise when turning... I was wondering what others have paid to have the pump replaced; parts and labor. I've heard there are specialty tools required (Pulley pullers etc) to do the job right. Any input is appreciated
Thanks,
Tom
i have never replaced a power steering pump on a superduty, but i can't see a pulley puller at auto zone costing more than $15. replacing the pump will be a little messy with the fluid but i can't see it being much more diffucult than an alternator. if you do it yourself once you add new fluid jack up the front so the tires are off the ground run the engine and turn the steering wheel back and forth a lot to bleed the system and get rid of all the air.
It's funny that you ask because I just had my local garage send me a quote about a month or so ago.
I am in San Antonio. My truck was a 1995 F-450 with a 7.3 l powerstroke. The total parts and labor I was quoted was $318.24 out the door (parts $164.85/labor $140 + taxes). This shop may be a little high, but they have the most knowledgable diesel mechanics I can find around here, and they always do things right the first time. I thought it was odd that when I got on the brakes hard I heard the same moaning that the steering pump made. I looked at the master cylinder and I see that there is some kind of large hose that goes from the master cylinder to the power steering pump. I don't know what it does.....but I don't know jack-s**t about power steering pumps anyway.
The diesel uses power steering pressure for the brakes' power-assist, because the diesel doesn't make vacuum like gassers do. (yes, I know, they have a vacuum pump to create vacuum for the air-box and other things, but they don't use it for the power-assist for the brakes).
I believe the only special tool needed would be a pulley puller like you said ...
It's not that bad of a job but you will need the Pulley remover. Do not try to use a gear puller for this as it will break the pulley. Good new is the puley remover is cheap and so is the pulley if you break it using a gear puller. Wanna guesss how I know this? Job should take about one to two hours depending on what needs to be removed to get at it. Also, there is a little nylon o-ring that goes in the high pressure side of the pump or on the high pressure hose (it's been a whie since I've done this so I don't remember exactly). If you cut this o-ring or don't get it installed correctly, it will leak. don't try to use th4 old one. These are one isntall rings only.
I just did mine on my Durango. I was quoted $250-$325. The pump was 45.00 and the pulley puller and install kit at Harbor frieght was $19.99. The hardest part was taking off and putting on the pulley. I don't know if the F250 come with or with out the tank but if it does just buy it with it.
Wow, thanks for all the replies... I talked to a shop today, they said 250 out the door... They also said it doesn't take very long, but it's a pain in the rear to get at (lots in the way) I should also note that we are good friends with the guys at the shop, so I don't think it's a line of bull... but some of the previous responses lend me to think otherwise.
Does anyone know the part number for the pump? Or the cheapest place to pick one up?
Thanks again... This place is so helpful
Tom
I looked at Checker Auto and this is what I found.
Cardone Power Steering Pump: Reman.
Part Number: 20283
The major cause of steering systems failure is contamination from deteriorating hoses. Hose replacement is recommended with any major component repair/replacement. Always install a new filter (part# 20FLT1) in the return line after replacing a pump.
Thanks for the links... I can't believe it's only 50 bucks for a new pump. And I do have the 5.4 so apparently it's a snap. Sadly, I busted up my finger tonight pretty good (cut a vein on my knuckle on my dominant hand) so I can't wrench so great... Guess I'm gunna have to bite the bullet and pay the 250 to have it done. I hate other people working on my truck, but at least if something goes wrong, they'll need to fix it. Thanks for all the help guys
FTE is the best
