Burnt odometer\drive light?

The escape I have has the odomter\drive light out? The part is relatively inexpensive but I think the insturment panel needs to be removed? I read in the haynes that (on a replacment) a scan tool needs to be used to load info back? Is that just the mileage etc?

I'm curious if anyone has done it before? I figure just disonnecting the airbag and taking the panel out isnt that difficult just wondering if disconneting it or actually replacing it would make it worth letting the dealer do it?

Set the hand brake, put the shift lever in low, drop the steering wheel to its lowest position, and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Remove 2 screws from the cluster bezel and pull it out. Remove 4 additional screws from the cluster and pull it out far enough to disconnect 3 electrical connectors on back. Remove the cluster and remove the bulb behind the odometer display by twisting its holder and pulling. Install a new bulb in the existing holder or get a new bulb with holder. Installation is the reverse. No scan tool is required. The odometer mileage is held in non-volatile memory and won't change.

I would do that in the VERY beginning and wait 15-30 minutes before working near the airbag. Just in case.

Very easy task. 15 minutes. Two bulbs for 2.29. Better than the 72.50 the garage was going to charge my wife.

Thanks ove1.

I had to take it out and went to advance autoparts to match it. I had to pull he bulb and match it to a clear one they had.

I've think that the bulb is a PC74, but I'm not 100% sure. It should be a push-in type bulb with or without a twist-in plastic holder. You can use the old holder with a new bulb.

I followed the above directions and they are exactly correct and as stated earlier, it took about 15 minutes (counting getting the tools out). I didn't disconnect the battery as the removal of the cluster doesn't have any connection with the airbag system. It would have taken longer to reprogram the radio as it did to replace the bulb.
