I want to apoligize up front for being old and retarded ,because this is kind of oddball, but, I have a friend with an old school bus "67 dodge" withe a 318 engine, who would like me to help him swap in a 383 engine. does any one know what has to be changed with the engine for it to work. Its been so many years since I had any thing to do with dodges , I cant remember. Respectfully , bob
I might can be of some help. Several years ago I swapped a slant 6 Dodge Dart to a 360 small block so I had to read up on a lot of the mopar stuff. I am pretty sure the motor mounts are different and the bell housing bolt patterns are alos different. These are the biggies to worry about. When doing the Dart change I found out that Chrysler did not build things to swap around. The slant 6, small block and the big blocks all have different bollt patterns for the belll housings. I would recommend to put a 360 in place of the 383. It will drop right in except for the motor mount is slightly different on one side but is a simple matter to use several washers as a spacer on that side. One thing to watch out for is that some of the mopar cranks are not drilled for a pilot bearing if they came originally with an automatic! These are some of the major things that I can think of. After the Dart swap I don't believe Chrysler made any two cars alike!
If I understand correctly you have a 318 now. Would a 360 swap in then? It has been WAY too many years since I have messed with Mopars but I have owned a few.
Mopar has 2 360 blocks, one based on the same 383/440 and the other off the 318 block. Pretty sure that the tranny bellhousing for a 318 and 440 will both be the same though. I've been in and out of Mopar sites and never noticed someone advertising a 727 tranny for an LA or 440 block....just a "727"
Mounts would be different, best to check with someone like advanced adapters, etc, that would know for sure...or try your favorite mopar site.
Thanks for the replies , I seem to remember that when a friend of mine , 35 years ago wanted to swap a 440 in where a 318 was , the only thing he had to change other than the small stuff was the X member , or motor mount crossmember , and the trans did bolt up . I would have posted this in a dodge forrum but I couldnt find one that i liked anywhere near as well as I like this one , and besides I'm a loyal ford-aholic Respectfully . bob
I just found a site called www.engine.swap.com that has all the info . other than the motor mounts and some adapting of some small stuff , Its a bolt in swap . Trans bolt paterns are all the same, dont even need the "K" member because its a bus, thanks again for the replies ,advice, and help , respectfully bob
A good Dodge Truck site where you will get all of your questions answered is: www.ramchargercentral.com I have been a member on this site for many years and have never found a question they couldn't answer about Dodges.
Didn't Dodge have a big block 318 also? IIRC, there is a guy around here who has one in a late 60's motor home.
Chrysler or Dodge did have what was/is referred to as a "Poly" 318, and maybe other CI 'Poly" blocks as well, but I have no idea what Poly stands for or means, or if it's the same as the 383/440...or maybe one of the Wedge blocks like the 413.
