I just got the heads rebuilt on my '72 302 and just finished getting everything back together. The service manual says that once the heads have been rebuilt a few times the standard push rods might be too long which wouldn't allow the valves to close completely. Apparently there are pushrods .060 shorter that you would then use.
I must have this condition because when I did a compression test with the new heads #5 cylinder is low and if I back the rocker arm nut off 1 turn the compression is good. Instead of the shorter pushrods couldn't a self-locking nut on the rocker arm be used (like SB chevy) and then the rockers could be individually set...maybe with the engine running. This would be a lot easier and cheaper than screwing around with different lengths of pushrods. Has anybody tried this? Comments?
