I had a mechanic disassemble it today and he said it has a chain, which by the way is in pieces and trashed my tranny.
Then you have a NP203 full time Tcase. Not a weak case but it will suffer if not maintained properly and it is old too. (27 years). Typically what happens with them is the chain wears because of age and improper maintainance and gets longer when chian pivot pins wear and then it trys to jump a tooth and it can get ugly.. If you have it rebuilt it will outlast truck at this stage and just be sure to use straight 30w non detergent oil in it as it does not foam like muilt visc oil will and will lube case a lot better too. (it was speced for 30w non detergent but few use it and even dealer because they no longer stock that grade of oil)
Can the 203 be used with manual hubs, and what is the shift pattern on the shift ****?
If someone did a conversion on it. Some of those conversion shorten Tcase life though from inproper internal oiling (the chain moving all the time keeps Tcase internals well lubed). Shift pattern is 4hi lock, 4hi, N, 4lo , 4lo lock.
This is really confusing because the shift **** has 4low, N, 2hi, 4hi
Is it the correct ****? If it is it is not the Tcase that the truck came with because the only Tcase with a chain in it back then in Ford was a 203. Maybe someone swapped in a 208 or the like which is lighter duty than the old 205 part time Tcase or 203 full time Tcase.
