I bought a rebuilt '94 F350 starter for a 460. I want to install on my newly rebuilt 400. Does anyone have instructions or suggestions on the rewiring?
I have what appears to be a newly purchased starter relay on the fender - do I reuse this? I was not able to see how the existing wiring fed the old starter, since it had already been removed. Is there a thick gauge wire that goes from the output side of the relay straight to the starter?
Actually, more importantly is what to do with the new 460 starter. On that starter, there is one terminal type tang, and then two bolts, one with a nut (and already painted black), and one without a nut that looks like it would normally have something bolted to it.
If I reuse the relay, do I still run a wire from the output terminal on the relay to the "tang" on the starter? Does the fact that the start has a solenoid change stuff?
I am guessing you have the permanent magnet type new starter. What I did was put the starter side cable on the battery side of solenoid and connect other end to the starters big terminal. Now make a cable at least 10 gauge with appropiate terminals and go from solenoid on inner fender starter side to that flat spade on the starters solenoid. This is because a magnet type motor will want to continue running after key is released and the old solenoid will break the connection, also better juice to solenoid. You will have battery voltage at starter on the big cable.
