Pinion Seal Replacement

Hey Guys,

Hope all had a very Merry Christmas.

(Project) 79 Ford F100, 2WD, 3 Speed on column

(Parts truck) 76-77 F100, 2WD, Auto C-4 trans

Going to change the complete rear ends out of these trucks

The rear end in the 76-77 appears to be a 9" and I was wondering if you have to completely disassemble this rear end to put in a new pinion seal.

I know I should completely rebuild it, but money and time restraints will not allow. The bearings and ring and pinion should be good according to my sources on this truck.

Also, if I unbolt the whole ring and pinion assembly to replace a gasket and further inspect, does it all come out as one assembly easily or are their hidden clips and such.

There is no tag on the replacement rear end that I have found. When I pull it, I can clean it up a little better to find out and when I pull the ring and pinion assembly apart I can count the teeth to find out the ratio.

Thanks in advance

you can pull the whole diff as an assembly, pull the axleshafts out far enough to clear the diff, then remove all the bolts holding it to the axle housing. It takes a pretty good effort to break the seal , but it will pop out. And its heavy, so be careful.

To properly replace the pinion seal you should remove the pinion housing from the diff. You should replace the crush sleeve and retorque it to achieve the proper bearing preload. If you have it that far apart, you may as well put new bearings in it.

The cheater way is to just retorue it back together as tight as you can, using the original crush sleeve.

Thank you beeboy,

I'll have to price the crush sleeve (and bearings) Money will dictate but I hate to do this half a**. I want it to last for a while.

Please correct me if I wrong -
Unbolt the axles from the wheel end - pull axles out a few inches (6"-8") - unbolt assembly and remove. Remove the yoke end - pull pinion out - replace seal and crush sleeve (maybe bearings to if money after christmas allows) and reassemble in reverse?

This is the short of it. I am sure these steps will take me a lot longer than some one with more ford experience - I have done 3 GM rear ends alone and they are a pain in the you know what.

if you are just going to do the pinion, you dont have to remove the whole carrier or the axles. The pinion support will come off separately. Though some gear sets are meant to be aligned, and have marks on one tooth to match the pinion to the ring gear. I doubt on an old set that that will matter much.

The crush sleeve is about $5. Bearings will run you about $15 each. 2 for the pinion. If you want to replace the carrier bearings thats another set. And more labor.

You will need about a 4 foot breaker bar, or a cheater pipe to get enough torque to crush the sleeve. And an inch pound dial indicator torque wrench, unless you can do it by feel.

Oh I forgot the pinion has a 3rd bearing on the 9", it actually goes in the housing.

Good luck with this.
