Ok, here's what happen, went on a search and rescue call in the back woods. My 1991 ford ranger super xlt 4x4 started to heat up 1st time ever.... Got home checked all fluids all good... it cooled down..... The next day while driving in heavy snow on freeway my truck will not go to normal temp it satys on COLD only and heater blows cold only....
I was told heater core is bad?????? Book says may be Heater coil????? I need my truck up to speed asap whatever i have to fix. I just drove it to town it stayed on cold all the way for 30 min never got to operating temp.......
I am with pinto on this one, my '99 4.0 overheated last winter, and when I went to replace the thermostat, I found that it had frozen shut (mechanically). The tiny check valve was frozen shut (mechanically) as well. Thermostats are fairly cheap, and if it has not been replaced in a while, it would be a safe bet checking it.
are yo uusing a 180? if so it might also be best to move to a 190 thermo for the winter. If it was the heater core then if this doesn't work check the core for clogs by flushing it out with a hose, or does smoke come out of the vents when you drive this could also be a sign.
How is your coolant level? If it got hot and you lost coolant, it may not have enough in it to get in the heater core. Your temp guage will quit working (show cold) too.
Sure sounds like the thermostat has stuck open & the engine is now over cooling.
If it's never been replaced, I'd place it high on the suspect list.
That overheating problem may have been a clue it was having problems regulating water flow, or you may have had an air flow problem through the radiator, anything from a plastic bag, leaves, brush, mud, or snow packed in or around the AC condensor, such that it was restricting air flow through the radiator.
So check that area carefully too, even between the condensor & radiator for debris.
Water is to the core. and the heater hose check valve has fluid in it. I think after all the research it has to be a stuck open themrostat, i just went and got one and will see in a little while it stops snowing.
Thank to all of you it looks like we covered all the bases.
