Had this almost this similar problem, driving truck and it just cuts out. The 94 ford ranger and b4000 have pretty much the same configuration under the hood. Go to the fuse holder on the left fender well and check for loose wires, the wires could be touching metal under the holder, upon vibration, it shorts and kills the engine. Also, a known problem, the relays go bad in the fuse holder and must be checked out for a possible short or faulty relay in this area. Good Luck
I like Kens idea to scan the computer for any stored trouble codes. With luck, maybe it's stored a good clue on where next to look.
In my area, most autoparts stores will do it at no cost, if your having problems, even though the "Check Engine Light" isn't on.
Some won't do it unless the CEL is on, so call around & see what the policy is in your area.
You can pull any codes yourself, on your vintage ride. Just check out the second "Read First" "Technical" thread Ken has located atop this forums main page, for links to instructions on how to do it on your ride.
Lots of other good "how to" info there too!!!!
If on your troubleshoot, you come to suspect the fuel pump power relay, which has been suggested as a common problem part & is (located in the underhood power distribution box), try swapping it out for the air condiioner power relay & see if the problem clears up.
If so, replace the fuel pump power relay.
These relays are a common problem part, as others have suggested & some folks with vintage rides, carry a spare or two like fuses, they are about $5 at most autoparts stores.
So don't start throwing parts at this problem, pull or have pulled, the computer codes first & post any & ALL you find.
Begin & follow a logical trouble shoot based on the codes you find & with the help on this forum, you'll likely unmask the root cause of your problem.
I've seen problems like this caused by such varied things as a faulty venting gas cap, to faulty fuel pump inertia switch, to bad relays, to wiring short circuits, to bad fuel pumps or fuel pressure regulators, to faulty computers or their electrical connections or grounds, to....well you get the idea.
So don't get fixated on one possiblity, check the codes & follow a logical troubleshoot, one step at a time & you'll likely find the problem.
The reason I earlier suggested cpulling codes first is because I'd like to think that if there is a FP relay problem that a code would be set, thus steering you to the relay. Given the history of these relays, they are logically an item to place high on the list of suspect areas.
sorry, I have to disagree. How do I come to that, I own a ranger that is subject to having this problem about stalling for no reason. I checked for codes as the good book says to but the code was not there. So after dealing with this gem, I finally drove truck, Yes, it started, to the dealer. Ford looked for codes and was finally able to get truck to stall and the code was not there. So the big guys had to tow the truck back to the shop and proceeded to start checking things. Well, as I had noted before, the fault was hidden under the fuse holder on the left fender inside engine compartment. It seems one of the wires was shorting out and a relay was bad. Why it did not throw a code, Ford does not know but in the long run, problem was fixed and truck is no longer having problems.
Just thought I would give someone hope out there, if no codes thrown.
Scarlett
Let me see if I can locate paperwork about the relay they replaced, I can also call Ford to have them check which relay they replaced. I know that it was located in the fuse box on the left fender.
Well, I think it may be time to take the truck in and see what Ford has to say, if the Ford dealership is anything like it is in California, they should apply the fee to check it out to the bill to get it fixed. Sorry it didn't turn out like mine did. Best Regards.
