[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Nov-01 AT 01:28 PM (EST)]Before driving long distances in bad weather, MAKE SURE YOUR HEATER WORKS!
Stupid me, I just drove 500 mi. and checked everything but the dumb heater. The blower was working, but only pumping cold air. The outside temp was above freezing, but I could see my breath in the cab.
Any suggestions on where to start when fixing my heater?
On the good side, I didn't get sleepy at the wheel.:+
Also - I want to thank everybody who has been posting info on this board. The resources found in this forum are invaluable.
[font color=red size=2]First make sure it is completely full of antifreeze, if that's low then there isn't enought to get to the heater. Second, make sure there isn't a valve on one of the heater hoses that is stuck, may need to be replaced/removed if there is. Third, make sure the contol levers on the dash are working smoothly and moving the doors in the dash.
Added to this, verifying the fact that the thermostat isn't a little on the cool side ,like less than 180*
Make sure you put a 180*-195* thermostat in it.

If the other ideas check out OK and you still don't have heat. Check to see if you heater hose are switched around. My truck had hardly no heat at all until I switched the hoses at the firewall. Top to bottom
& bottom to top, but my doesn't have a heater coltrol valve. Good Luck

Now that I think about it, I did replace the valve awhile back. I bet when I reconnected the hoses, I got them mixed up. I'll give her a look this weekend.
Blue,
Make sure you've got flow through it. Flush it with a hose to make sure its clear of garbage. I've got to do mine once a year. I hook up a hose splicer to it, connect the garden hose and blast it out! Works great!

Make sure the valve is closed. That the normal position. The little vacuum line pulls it open. My dash control doesn't shut the vacuum off when it should so I disconnect and plug the vaccum line for winter for now.
